Page 1 of Building a Gaming PC?
PCs & Mobiles Forum
Hello,
I have been thinking for a while about building a gaming PC, i had never really been into gaming on a PC in the past because i don't like sitting in front of a monitor and using a keyboard and mouse.
But i see now you can use an Xbox one controller to play most games and play them in 4K resolution on your TV...plus games are a bit cheaper downloaded from steam?
I was going to buy a gaming desktop or laptop but some of the prices are crazy so was thinking of building one myself...
I don't have any problems with building one myself and installing drivers and setting up the bios but i haven't been following specs of processors/graphics cards or anything PC related for years so don't know what to go for.
Wanting to build a silent 4K gaming machine but don't know what to look for.
Any help or info appreciated.
Cheers.
tomshardware is probably still the most useful site for charts of processors and graphics cards, they usefully give you "bang for buck" as well
remember you may or may not save any money, as the deals Dell etc do, bulk purchasing power, money they get from bundling bloatware etc, mean they can offer PCs cheaper than a home build.
however at least with a home build, you know exactly which motherboard, graphics card etc is insde, and you choose where to cut corners on cost, rather than the manufacturer.
pcspecialist may be a good place to look, and I think overclockers is still regarded as a good place to buy components and their forums should be useful, when you have a budget in mind.
Sorry can't help more than that, can't really be arsed with it all myself any more :)

The last time I looked into doing this the above holds true unless you are planning to go Linux. It was the operating system that constantly tipped it over the edge.
Having said that if cost isn't the only motivation and you've the time have at it.
I'd consider what games your interested in though as it seems to me that unless your playing the absolute latest 'queue round the block at midnight' you can get away with a lot less than turns up on a simple 'Best gaming PC' Google.
Unless you want a water cooled neon art installation that is.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what `it` was.
Now, what I`m with isn`t it, and what`s `it` seems weird and scary
Have a look at PC Part Picker.

Very useful to see what other people are doing. Also allows you to determine which components are compatible with each other.

This will probably be quite expensive. Do you have a budget in mind?
Also, unless it's urgent, I would recommend waiting for the new line-up of video cards from Nvidia and AMD later this year. They will both be using a new smaller fabrication process which should bring big performance gains over the current generation.
Hi,
I'm in no hurry to build a PC.....i probably won't even get time to use it or build it with my job at the moment.
I have asked my brother to built one for me and he has asked about my budget also.....i would imagine i would need to spend over £1000 for a decent spec gaming PC?
My brother has his own PC repair business and has a few reliable Chinese suppliers so maybe get it built a bit cheaper.
But if these new graphics cards are coming out shortly i would rather just wait on them.
Thank's for letting me know.
Aye I would wait for the next generation now. Also you'd get something pretty amazing for well under £1000 if all you are replacing is the PC itself and not the monitor(s)/keyboards/etc.

The new GTX 1080 seems to be the card to aim for this year. 30-40% boost over the Titan X for less than half the price. Available from the 27th.

The 1080 does indeed look like a beast. However, only the reference "founder's edition" cards will be available on the 27th. The custom cooled units from the hardware partners like EVGA, MSI, Asus, etc will likely appear a few weeks later.
AMD have yet to announce their new line-up and there have been rumours that they've had problems with the 14nm fab process, leading to the new cards being delayed until the autumn. Ed Crisler from Sapphire (AMD's lead AIB partner) has said that Nvidia are scared of what AMD has in store, hence the soft paper launch.
Whatever the case, the 1080 will devour anything you throw at it. Here it is playing Doom on ultra settings in 4k at a constant 60fps:
