changing date taken on loads of photos

admars (Elite) posted this on Saturday, 24th September 2016, 19:51

I had an "interesting" issues today. was making a photo album in photobox, but the photos came from different ppl, different cameras, some who don't seem to know how to set date/time on their cameras :(

So I had painstaikingly worked out the right order, and numerically, and uploaded them to photobox, which by default sorts by date taken, so had been a mess. however, unfortunately, when you use auto create to create a photo book, it goes back to using date taken, so rather than do it all myself from scratch, or delete a few pics, then readd to each page, I thought there must be a way to set all the "date taken"s.

irfanview I've used in the past, and most of the other (free) image manipulation programmes, and file utils, were able to se the date, but I didn't want all to have same date and time, I needed each one incremented slightly. one tool came up which looked good, but that specific functionality I wanted was only available in pay for version, didn't really want to pay £20 for something I could do manually, and would probably never want to do again.

however Exifer did it, it's an old program by looks of things, and looks no longer supported, official website is in German and didn't seem to have it however
http://download.cnet.com/Exifer/3000-2192_4-10142150.html and other places have it. Looks to do a lot of exif stuff, which I guess is normal for you ppl that use Lightroom et al.

anyway, nicely have a folder of photos now, all taken on same day, but 1 second after the previous, which should be good :)

thought I'd mention as I can't be the only person to have had this issue, and doesn't want to use some command lien tools, or a perl script I saw mentioned :)

Also I was about to post the question here how to do it, but I eventually came to the answer, thanks google :) Would also be interested if there is a more modern piece of free software which could do it, or if I was being a bit dense and did it the long way :)

Actually lightroom really doesn't offer much EXIF support at all! I have to use a plugin by Jeffrey F called Metadata viewer:

I actually also use his Flickr one (even though LR now supports Flickr) and his Geotagging plugin too.

For a local carnival I took two cameras this year, and had a similar date issue, my new one has GPS so the correct time, the old one doesn't so it's drifted by a few minutes.

JF may have a plugin to help with that... I should look.

This is weird, for such a niche question, I was about to ask much the same thing (sorting images purely on exif data).

I used to be with it, but then they changed what `it` was.
Now, what I`m with isn`t it, and what`s `it` seems weird and scary

I had to do something similar recently a year or so back and Exifer was the one I used too.  Mine was because I was combining pictures into one album from two different cameras - but the time hadn't been adjusted on one of them (for time difference abroad).  It let me select a batch and apply an offset to the date taken times.  Quickly, all the photographs were back in chronological order.

yeh, it did the job fine, when i uploaded them into photobox it kept them in the right order, which saved me a lot of time :)

Exiftool used together with ExiftoolGUI is a good way of altering EXIF data; not sure how easy it is to change dates etc. in bulk though, but worth taking a look.
