Empire Direct or Amazon?

niteowl (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 6th August 2008, 18:10

I want to purchase a camcorder in time for our hols and can`t decide whether to get it from Amazon or Empire Direct.

Amazon: have a sort of price drop policy i.e. if the price drops after you`ve purchased it they`ll refund the difference (need to check their T&C/small prints as difficult to find). No extra warranty.

Empire Direct: have a edXtreme card (costs £30) and enables you to get 3 year warranty on most things (including the camcorder) you buy for them for next 12 months plus other perks with the card. However, they don`t refund if the price drops after you purchased it (within certain amount of time).

The last review on retailer review didn`t give good reports on Empire Direct.

Decisions, decisions.

What about John Lewis if there`s one near you?

Checked John Lewis (online - nearest one is about 50 miles away), they`re more expensive by about £150 compared to Amazon. Empire direct similiar price to JL but prepared reduce price (not sure how much) . :/

From memory I don`t think John Lewis price match with internet, I`ll phone them up later and check instore price as it does vary from their online ones.

Definitely worth checking instore price. Few months back I was looking at Sony LCD TVs, online John Lewis price was 20% higher than my nearest store.

John Lewis offer long warranties but whack up the cost as a result. I don`t think I`ve ever found anything cheaper with John Lewis - they don`t even try to compete.

I`d go with Amazon because you might find their speed of delivery is better.

I opted with Empire direct in the end.

Very happy with price (they priced matched another site on the web) reducing theirs by £175 (plus Sony manufacturer £50 cheque back offer). I took out the empire direct card (about £23 annually) that give extended guarantee of 3 years in total and some other perks. It worked out cheaper purchasing via the phone than via quidco (which I think was about 2%).

My order arrived next day (they didn`t charge delivery- matched with other site). They even called to check I was happy with everything and that I`d received it okay.

All in all I was very impressed and won`t hesitate to recommend them to others.
