But should he play?.....

Stay with me here.....

Not that I`m clinging on to the past.. BUT... in 1966 who was Englands Greatest striker?.... Jimmy Greaves..... Did he play in the latter stages?.. no.... Injured against France (I think)... Was he available for the actual Final?... Yes.... This is where my Rooney question comes in.... Alf could have played Greaves... But didn`t.. he kept faith with the "settled" and winning team.... Hurst was a fringe player and drafted in late... and look at what a legend he became....

Soooooooooooo Rooney can`t play in the first part.... If we get through... to a stage where Rooney can play... DO we upset what could be a "settled" wining team just to play Rooney?... I don`t think Sven is a strong enough manager to say no.....

Just a thought......

Yeah but I`m not sure that Crouch is the answer. I could agree with that if Defoe was in the squad but Crouch? Mmmm. I think Crouch will do `ok` but scoring three against a shambolic Jamican side is a little different to scoring against a well organised South American or European team.
The thing with Rooney is that he has that extra required to win a World Cup which traditionally teams need to have, ie, Pele, Maradona, Cruyff, Zidane, Ronaldo etc...

I was always a bit dubious about how good Rooney actually is. I had seen him on TV loads and he always looked a good player, but i was unsure just how good.

Then I saw him live against West Ham, and what you cant see on the TV is just haw incredible his movement is. You have to remember he is a player the opposition will know about, and one there defenders will have been training all week to defened against, yet he still was able to find space to recive the ball (i know Ferdinand and Gabbidon are not world class, but there are certainly not poor centre halfs).

The boys movement is exceptional, on and off the ball, but you have to see him live to realy understand just how good he is.

So yes, i would play him for sure.

Nick, you`re right - he`s easily one of the best players this country has ever produced.
