Watched this Edgar Wright documentary on Netflix last night.
Highly enjoyable, quirky and enlightening. The 'joke' at the beginning of the film is that everyone has heard of Sparks, but nobody really knows anything about them. And frankly this is pretty true. They were the weird but interesting group with the bloke who looked like Hitler staring out the camera and the fey one doing the singing who looked like Marc Bolan. But apart from recognising a handful of songs down the years, I didn't really know anything about them.
With a sprinkling of famous fans and talking heads, we finally do learn quite a bit about them and their original and uncompromising music and their limited but enduring success (they're still going). And it's very entertaining. Big recommends.
Cool, it's been on my "to do" list with umpteen other films. I became aware of them, when I was at uni, and they released a couple of songs with my favourite band at the time Faith No More. This was from there album Plagiarism, where they "covered" their own songs with different artists. So I bought the CD for the 2 Faith no More featured songs, but also loved the song with Jimmy Somerville, and one with Erasure!
Also, on that Faith no More tour, when I saw FNM at Brixton, for the encore, Mike Patton introduced "f***ING SPARKS" and seemed extremely excited to have them on stage with him to do those 2 songs they worked on with them. I think most people were thinking "who?" as I don't think they were well known here, but had cult status in Europe and USA?

It is brilliant even if you aren't a massive fan. I can also recommend one that I think was on Sky Arts about The Go Go's. Pretty enlightening too.
