Review of Almost Elvis
Introduction
I`ve never been a huge Elvis fan and had mixed feelings about this disc from the very start. I instantly assumed it would be about a bunch of blokes doing their very best to destroy every song by the King they could. A group of overweights, Chinese, Indians, Britons doing their damdest to impersonate Mr Presely.
What I found instead was an informative look at the lives of some of the worlds top Elvis imitators. These aren`t your average copycats, these are the cream of the crop and some do bare an uncanny resemblance to the Hound Dog himself. In fact I`m sure I saw one of them down our chippy the other night.
The documentary is stylish and full of laughs and not camp and O.T.T. as I had expected. These are loyal fans who deplore the sends-ups of their beloved Star. They seem to know more about the King than probably Prescilla.
Video
Average Digital TV fair. This means it is clean and crips but does contain quite a bit of macro blocking in areas of solid colour. The colours are vibrant throughout and darks are pretty solid with whites haloing and smearing slightly.
Audio
A very lightweight mono track with no separation and no base to speak of. Disappointing!
Features
A mixed bag of Games, Interviews, Making of Docs and Making of DVD Docs. Most are short and sweet and add little depth to what is already a documentary feature. The one to watch or listen to is the crews recount of the whole making and how they were also extremely surprised by the quality of these Elvis performers. This is very funny stuff!
Conclusion
Poor sound spoils a DVD that surprises. Fans of Elvis will love it and admire the strong morals these supporters have.
