Can I hack a DVD to burn in Multi-region?

DaveyD (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Tuesday, 30th September 2003, 10:33

Hello All,

If I have a recordable DVD (region4), and hack it to play all regions DVDs, does this mean that any DVDs I burn on this machine will play as a multi-regional DVD? Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

Davey

Rip using DVDShrink (freeware) and the resultant DVD you burn will be region-free. The only problem you might have is whether your TV/standalone DVD player can handle NTSC if the original disc uses this video standard instead of Pal which we mainly use in the UK. Most decent TVs and standalone DVD players don`t have a problem with this, however.

The DVDs you burn will be region free anyway, regardless of whether the recorder is hacked or not.

Region coding only applies to commercial DVDs, not ones you burn yourself.

Not quite true.If you copy a disc using a recorder it will be region free. However if you are using special programs like DVDXCOPY to copy the entire disc including menus etc, then Region coding remains on the copy.I do not know if you can change this. But when I tried to use DVDXCOPY it would not even read a disc that did not comply with the region code of my dvd drive.I have multi region software, but was unable to incorporate that into the DVDXCOPY process.

dvdshrink as mentioned has 6 tick boxes 1-6 regions so tick them all before you burn and the discs will play on all six region codes ie:MULTIREGION

This only applies to a PC based DVD Writer, not a standalone.
If I understand this thread right, we`re talking about an Australian standalone DVD Recorder, which wouldn`t record a region code anyways.

If PC based, summat like DVD Decrypter automatically removes region coding anyway, but you can then manually add a region of your choice...(gawd knows why though!!)

Oh, and to all those who remember me....hiyas again <grin>

:D If you want to copy protected dvds, follow these instructions:-
Download DVDdecrypter from the net.{its free}.This will remove the Css protection.Set it to file copy, and highlight all files. This will now copy to a directory of your choice one very large file. Now you need CloneDvd.This you can get from Kazza.Load the file into clone highlighting all file and menus.you will now have options to pick audio language and sub-titles etc. When you have done this clone will convert the file, which will take about an hour and then it will write it,which will take about another hour.Write to Dvd-R for the best results.Your final copy will be region free and virtually undetectable from the original.

This is not true, all DVD recorders record the region bit setting onto the disk. It will set each region flag on the disk to autarise playback.

To undertsand the region coding system, you have to have knowlege about how a play interpits the flags on the disk etc.

What a play is really looking for on the disks is the regions in which the disk is not autharised to play in.

Hope this helps and please do not hesite to get back if further help is reqired....

Well, mebbes I got an unusual E50 then, cause it records with no region setting.

Mind you, oddly enough, doesn`t recognise macro either ;)

and no, this is an outta the box R2 player....although it wont be R2 if I can find out what I`m doing with this goddamned service menu! lol

John72 is wrong if he is talking about standalone dvd recorders. These do not record any region coding on any discs.
If you are talking about PC rewriters then thats a different story. Some software like DVDXCOPY replicate the disc entirely, including region coding, and copy protection. But it sounds as if others have found programs that will change the code, although I have not tried myself on a rewriter.
