RE: Blowing MP3 CDs

depends on your hardware. A tyt player goes through the folders.

RE: I`m thinking of building my own sub - need help!

you`ll be amazed - less boomy and more defined sound, plus no reverberation, and you can drive it louder without annoying the neigbours!

Samsung DVD-M105 components

I`ve just got one of these and discovered that it plays those dodgy VCDs that would never work on my Scan or on my PC. how cool. Anyway, I`m curious to know what hardware`s actually inside an M105, but I don`t want to open the unit.

oh and line the cabinets with foam. put the finished speakers on spikes as well.

Just a thought - you might try musicians shops. often guitar shops sell or supply replacement drivers for guitar amp/speakers. I`ve built my own hi-fi speakers using Celestion woofers and they sound bloody beautiful. a whole world apart from the Panasonic speakers I did have.

RE: Help - Samsung M105 Hack!!

I have just got a brand new DVD-M105. I don`t know what version the firmware is, but I enabled multi-region using the well publicised method, but instead of the normal region 2 code I used `57538`

RE: Whats your favourite movie quote?

From the Italian Job
"Oi! You`re only supposed to blow THE BLOODY DOORS OFF!"

Or from the Sweeney again
"Get yer trousers on. You`re nicked."

RE: Scan SC-2500 audio level and RGB centering problems?

I had the same RGB alignment problem on my hitachi widescreen. basically in the secret engineers menu there is a different alignment option for RGB, which you can adjust it with.

Have a search on the net for "engineers mode" or "service menu" or similar for your make and/or model of TV. and when you find it, be careful in there! don`t mess with any other settings.

as for the volume thing - it`s normal. the movie soundtrack is made for theatres, and has to cope with much greater extremes of loudness and quietness, so the overall volume is lower. Some DVD players allow you to adjust this by using dynamic range compression. The best way it just to turn the TV volume up though, or run it through a stereo/5.1 decoder

Can anyone identify the new Scan 2500

Scan.co.uk have a new player, the SC-2500. It doesn`t look like a TYT player, though it is a DVD-Rom based one by the looks of it, and the remote seems vaguely familiar.

Can anyone identify it - is is a rebadged new thing or a rebadged old thing? I note the scan logo is pressed into the steel cover too.

RE: NEW SCAN SC-3000 - Just received mine.

This is where your problems start...

The Scan Sc2000 is a cheap player, thrown together, and they generally arrive with faults. Getting a replacement or a refund proves to be bloody impossible, and Scan are no strangers to Trading Standards.

IF you get one that works (my 3rd one did!) then it`s a fab player, otherwise no.

I would never advise anyone to purchase anything at all from that company. If you want an SC-2000, go and buy a Logix, Daewoo or Manhattan instead. They are the same player.

I`m sure this new player is also sold by someone else either now or in the future, but I`d steer clear anyway.
It looks to me like a cheap DVD-Rom drive based solution to me, and for £300 I`d want somthing a whole lot more substantial.

RE: Problems Contacting Play247

I just can`t get through to them I have been getting the same engaged tone for 2 weeks now. they won`t reply to my emails. My region 1 discs arrived, my region 2 ones didn`t.

any ideas?

Cold Feet - great series, crap quality

Is the Cold Feet DVD just p*** poor quality or what - it looks like it`s mastered from VHS, takes forever to get through all the stupid Granada/VCI/all of their mates advert screens, and my mate can`t even play disc 1 on his encore dv450. (so if anyone knows whether a firmware upgrade would help, please let me know)

having said that, isn`t it a great show. I didn`t watch it on tv cos it was ITV, and therefore (I wrongly assumed) rubbish.

RE: Back by popular demand - what players have you all got then ?

Scan SC2000 (x2 until the couriers take the old one back!)

RE: MULTI-REGION PHONO PROBLEM

your player is sending NTSC discs out as straight NTSC perhaps? See if you can persuade it to convert to PAL.

RE: DVD commentaries - waste of time?

I always listen to them - I really like to get the inside story on why shots and scenes are as they are.

RE: Subwoofer Placement

Low frequencies cannot be `placed` directionally by the human ear, so in terms of that it is not important, but the soundwaves can interfere with other emmissions from your other speakers - i`d recommend putting it low (on the floor) underneath or behind you.

If you want to drive it louder, put it on a set of spikes and not touching anything that touches walls or floor - that way the sound is in the air, not travelling through the floor and walls, and therefore you can have it louder without annoying your neighbours - you may also get a much tighter, punchier, more focussed sound.

RE: Scan Official Response

Yeah, I think that it`s fair enough if a Scan supplied upgrade f***s things up - then they should be liable. but they have never advised downgrading, so it`s reasonable to say they do not have to replace a machine you have downgraded. If they do that`s a huge favour to the owner.

However, they don`t really have to lose anything doing this, cos they can take the chip out, put it in a flash programmer and put a newer firmware back on - they could maybe do this on a chip-exchange basis - you _might_ have already stuffed your guarantee so possibly it doesn`t matter if you open your machine.

RE: Recommend a widescreen tv

I got the Hitachi C28W410TN for £320 from the Hitachi Factory Shop in East Ham, London (they did have a site at www.whatsonsale.co.uk and it was a special internet price)

Anyway its a really nice TV - pukka. It did have some gaussing problems from being stored near a load of louspeakers i guess, but they have now all gone (when the telly is switched on from cold it degausses, and eventually it fixes it all)

RE: hitachi tv question

Dukey, I`ve got the 401 (i think - anyway same telly line but the cheapest model - it has no phono outs at the back, but it does have a headphone socket at the front - can it easily be modified to add phonos?

I guess they use the same logic boeard but add or subtract components depending on the model.

Mine also has a slight tilt, which is no big problem, but it would be nice to kil it - is there a pot on the board i can twiddle?

RE: RCE..........next wave......

damn, I was going to buy CA too.

Now who can tell me - Can i just go to the hidden menu on my Scan and choose region 1 to watch an RCE disk or do i have to put in the proper region code? does changing the hidden menu do anything?

RE: Any hacks for Logix DVD 3000, that will work !!

some different firmwares have different hacks. You need to have the machine on, but with no disc in for any of them to work.
Try the yahoo scan thread or nivs faq.

RE: Subwoofer?

then again, you could build a subwoofer yourself.
http://www.celestion.co.uk/pro/pro.htm for top quality cones,
make your own enclosure and if you need power amplification go to Maplin. Maplin also do a book on loudspeaker design

RE: Subwoofer?

you said it yourself - they`re crap.

They are basically powerful woofers designed to produce proper bass for all those tinny little sattelite speakers.

A properhi fi subwoofer of the £100-200 mark is designed to produce really earth moving low frequency and subsonic bass, the assumption being that your other speakers are themselves capable of a decent low frequency response.

RE: Why r expensive dvd players not multi-regional?

my Sony monitor has just gone pop. poo.

RE: Snatch - Widescreen

mine`s widescreen - it`s anamorphic so the full height of the picture is used, and it`s only stretched horizontally.

Some of the extras/deleted scenes are 4:3 though.

RE: Difference in quality??

Before I got my new telly I was using a similar setup and had the Scan convert the signal to PAL - to be honest I never noticed any drop in quality at all.

RE: will dvd REALLY completely replace vhs???

interesting question - I reckon for pre-recorded stuff DVD is well on the way to replacing VHS, but as a recording device, it could only hope to do that if it was to offer significantly better quality than vhs. If you have digital TV then absolutely perfect copies could be made, but recording from analogue might not.
Then you have to consider the possibility that there`s no way the TV companies would let you do this - I`m thinking some kind of Macrovision-alike scotching signal would also be broadcast to protect their copyright and that of their film suppliers.

RE: When playing audio CD`s on my SC2000 it sometimes just stops playing.

Yes, I think it was a hardware fault on these machines (which have the older decoder and stuff) - that`s what they told me and thats why I got mine replaced - You should try and get a replacement - the thing is still under guarantee after all, and it`s not doing its job.

Post a few here directly to Nelly (Nilesh Raja) if you cannot get satisfaction by phoning Scan support. Also email yllen[at]ku.oc.nacs and try and arrange it.
