Hong Kong Legends DVDs
Wow! Buy these discs now and support HKL - the best DVD production company in the UK!
My favourite discs are:
Once Upon A Time In China
Iron Monkey
Drunken Master
Armour Of God
New Dragon Gate Inn
The Black Sheep Affair
What does everyone else think?
RE: Couching Dragon Hidden What?
Mr Fat???
How many films of this genre have you actually seen? Chinese surnames are not the last name like ours, but the first! Chow Yun Fat is Mr Chow! His Christian name is Yun Fat, like mine is Chris.
I would have thought that anyone who had seen as many films of this genre as you claim to have would know that.
RE: DVDBO HAVE ROBOCOP CRITERION IN LIMITED SUPPLIES!!!
It IS cut to bits.
There are various scenes missing, including most of the Murphy shooting scene.
Basically it will be the TV version without the swear words dubbed out.
RE: John Woo
Have you ever actually seen a John Woo film???
I`m not talking about his American efforts here (i.e MI2 and Hard Target), but his Hong Kong movies - The killer, Hard Boiled??
Has there ever been an action movie to rival Hard Boiled?? I don`t think so...
And to compare Woo to Schumacher is an insult.
RE: What region is best for BLADE!!
I have the R2 copy which is very good - but I`ve heard that the R1 version has a 5 minute longer running time.
This could be because of cuts, or it could also be due to the PAL speedup of 4%.
The extras are very good on the R2 disc, and the PAL picture is slightly sharper than an NTSC one, but if you want to make sure it is definitly uncut, go for R1.
RE: Would you consider a Projection Tv ?
I wouldn`t buy that set - the sound is pretty good, although a little flat, and the picture is nothing special.
Have a look around for the new Panasonic range of sets. The 36PG50 has a 36 inch flat widescreen tube, and it has dts surround sound. And yes, I am sure - I work in a shop which sells them.
The picture isn`t brilliant when you`re stood about 2 feet away, but the set was designed to be viewed from a distance. From around 6 feet, the picture is amazing and cannot be beaten for the price!
The set costs around £2000 - £2500, but you could probably find it cheaper if you looked around.

If you click this link it will take you to Panasonic`s UK website and to the TV I am rambling about. There is a small picture of it as well as all the details of its many features. Go and check it out in a showroom. I don`t think you`ll be disappointed.
Se7en Region 2 dts?
Does the Region 2 version of the Platinum Edition of Se7en have a dts soundtrack?
The review of it on this site says it does, but I`ve heard from various sources that it only has a Dolby Digital 5.1 sountrack. Also, there is no mention of the film having a dts track on the packaging.
If it does have dts, why don`t New Line shout about it? It is a major factor on whether I buy a film over here instead of on Region 1.
Also, does anyone know of any cuts to the Region 2 version of Se7en? I haven`t heard of any but I will buy the Region 1 version if the British one is cut. I can`t stand watching a butchered film.
Eraser cuts...
I don`t think the train/limo scene at the end of Eraser is the one that was cut for the 15 certificate release.
The scene that was cut (which looks obviously cut when you watch it closely) is where they storm that lasses house in the woods and there are a load of blokes there waiting for them.
This scene was butchered for my PAL VHS copy. If I ever buy a version of this film on DVD, I`ll be sure to buy the Region 1 version because that should be completely uncut. Anyone own it?
Also, I think that it could be released in Britain with an 18 certificate, as the Terminator 2 Special Edition is going to be released uncut as an 18 (if it ever sees the light of day over here). Doesn`t really bother me if it doesn`t because I`ve already got the superior Region 1 set. There`s rumours of the Region 2 set not having the scene branching, so you can`t select which version you would like to watch!
How poor is that? Surely it could be done for a Region 2 disc if it has been done for Region 1. And don`t count on the Region 2 set having dts either...
Magnificent Warriors Easter Egg?
Can anyone find the hidden extra on HKL`s Magnificent Warriors?
I have searched the menus and cannot find it at all.
Way Of The Dragon out tomorrow!! Ordering my copy in a minute...
RE: Anyone know of any good R3 (Hong Kong) DVD shopping sites?
Did any of them get charged import duties? I read the small print of dddhouse.com and it says all import duties will be payable by me. I`ve heard this can be up to £35!!
Would it be better to but 1 title at a time, or buy in bulk?
I usually use play247.com, who take care of import duties for you, but they do not sell Hong Kong movies (except the excellent Hong Kong Legends and a couple of other titles).
Anyone else had to pay import duties? How much were they?
RE: What`s the worst film ever?
Definitly has to be Van Damme`s Cyborg. Utter rubbish. Do not ever waste your time watching even the first 5 minutes of this film. Why do they even bother to make films that are this bad?
Few other films that I hae are:
Children Of The Corn III
Streetfighter (as you can see, I hate Van Damme flicks - they`re all a waste of time)
Batman & Robin
Might think of some more later...
RE: Anyone know of any good R3 (Hong Kong) DVD shopping sites?
Thanks both of you for letting me know about these sites. I think I will make my first purchase from dddhouse.com. I`m going to buy a few old Jackie Chan movies, as well as The Accidental Spy.
Have you or anyone else out there used this site before? I`ll let you know how my purchase goes.
Chris.
Anyone know of any good R3 (Hong Kong) DVD shopping sites?
Does anyone know of any good (and fairly cheap) R3 DVD shops online, because I am sick of buying Hong Kong films over here and finding them to be cut (sometimes by nearly half an hour - i.e. Jackie Chan`s First Strike).
The only decent Hong Kong films released on DVD over here are from Hong Kong Legends. If you`re a fan of HK films, support HKL and buy their discs! They release uncut versions of movies, including the normally-butchered Bruce Lee films.
RE: Who out there has the most DVDs?
I`m 17 on the 30th. I bought myself (within a year) a Samsung 807 DVD player, then a Technics SC-EH750 hi-fi, then I got bored with Dolby Pro Logic and disc skipping on my Samsung, so I sold it and got a Panasonic RV-60 - all this in 1 year! I don`t know how I`ve afforded it, but it`s been really expensive, and I`ve still managed to get 56 DVDs!
I`ve just ordered Iron Monkey and Eastern Condors (I`m a BIG fan of HK films), so that`s 58 discs. I think I`ll probably order Legend Of A Drunken Master next.
Still waiting for Crouching Tiger... 5th of June!! ARGH!!
I am very impressed with some of you out there having more than 200 DVDs - wow!
Who out there has the most DVDs?
I`d like to know who has the biggest collection of DVDs out there in the big wide world.
Be honest.
In case you were wondering, I have 56, my 57th on order (Crouching Tiger).
RE: The Terminator - Only £15.99 - Not Bad
They are still poor cases - they don`t last long at all. I`ve got Fight Club (R1), The Terminator (R2), and X-Men (R1), and none of them are in brilliant condition, and they just sit there on my shelf, until I want to watch them again.
RE: woolworths 3 for 2
I quite liked Alien Resurrection - it`s better than Alien 3 anyway. I already have the box set on VHS, but I`m selling all my videos off and replacing the best ones with DVDs. I have always liked the Alien Legacy, so I thought I`d get Resurrection, because I already had Alien and Aliens.
I agree about the "featurette". I`d call it a trailer.
RE: What are best british based dvd sites that sell r1 disks
I use www.play247.com all the time - they have good service, and I always get pre-releases on or 1 day after they are supposed to come out.
I pre-ordered MI: 2 from them and it arrived almost 1 month (!) before it was supposed to be out, which was a surprise to say the least.
I definately recommend them - I have bought 10 DVDs off them now (mostly Hong Kong Legends titles) without any hassles at all.
RE: woolworths 3 for 2
I was down my local Woolies in my lunch hour on Saturday and picked up Die Hard, Broken Arrow, and Alien Resurrection.
I wanted The Fifth Element but it was out of stock, so I might go back and get that and maybe Entrapment and something else.
Pretty good offer though, because the discs work out at about £11 each.
RE: Where`s Cheapest
I don`t think Predator has actually been released on R2 DVD yet, but there are two versions available on R1, and the best place to look if you`re using a Switch is probably Play247.com.
It`s got both versions (I`d go for the newer one as it has a dts surround track), and I think they are about £16 - £18.
RE: The Terminator - Only £15.99 - Not Bad
"Bad thing its in an amray case where as the uk one comes in a nice cardboard case."
Eh? Why the hell would you want a cardboard case? Amary cases are miles better! I just hope Warner start doing what they have done in Australia and reprint their DVD covers into sleeves so we can replace all those awful cardboard ones we have now.
RE: The Rock: Criterion Collection 2 Disc Set - £27.99
Just to let you know, MovieTyme is selling The Rock: Criterion Edition for £24.99 - that`s the cheapest I`ve seen it.
Play 247 has it at £34.99, and Future Entertainment has it at £27.99.
RE: Hong Kong Legends fans read this!
I do like all the films released, and they are very good discs anyway, so why wouldn`t I collect them?
RE: Hong Kong Legends
I haven`t heard anything about Wheels On Meals, although it is an ace film. We can only hope...
Well, we`ve at least got Drunken Master and Armour Of God now (two of my favourite JC films).
Hong Kong Legends
Anyone else out there as big a HKL fan as me? Send me mail at ggel.sirhc[at]ku.oc.tensf.socsacad if you want to chat about new releases and stuff. And, I`ll give you my Martial Arts website homepage address so you can visit that.
Chris
RE: Hong Kong Legends fans read this!
I`ve ordered Once Upon A Time In China and it is now in the post. I`ll admit it`s not the best Hong Kong film, but it`s still class.
I`ve also got Armour Of God on order to come on the same day. I`ll have them all!
Oh well, slightly differing opinions there, but HKL deliver some good discs.

Hong Kong Legends fans read this!
If you go to www.play247.com you can get all the HKL discs at £14.99 each! That`s £5 cheaper than in the shops. All of the 10 released titles (including Armour Of God and Once Upon A Time In China) are available at this price, so go get them now!
Drive is also available at this price, although it is not strictly a Hong Kong Legends title. Definitely worth buying though.
If you can`t decide which to buy mail me at 74ggelsirhc[at]ku.oc.tensf.socsacad and I`ll give you my opinion on them all.
RE: Wharefedale 750S hacked, but American DVD`s seem to
Some Bush TV`s can`t take a PAL60 signal. Set up your player so that it`s outputing on RGB (some TV`s only accept NTSC pictures in RGB mode, otherwise they`re black & white) and just keep changing the signal standards. If not, buy a new TV. Panasonic are good and can accept NTSC 3.35 and 4.23 signals.
RE: panasonic A-360 hack needed please!!
Sorry, but there are no remote hacks for any Panasonic DVD players.
Try www.techtronics.com - they do an upgrade service which I have just had done to my Panasonic RV-60. They pick it up and deliver it free of charge, and it may be expensive (probably around £75), but it`s woth a look. I recommend them.
RE: Is 100Hz worth the extra money?
I work in a shop which sells both Sony Wega and Panasonic Tau TV sets. In my opinion the Panasonic has the better tube (Quintrix), and I do agree that 100hz is not brilliant for watching fast-moving pictures. Loewe (a German make) also have fantastic pictures - better than both Panasonic and Sony.
Have a look at the Panasonic 32PF10 / 32PK1 / 32PK3. The 32PF10 has a 100hz flatscreen tube (16:9), and it is £1499, the 32PK1 has a 50hz flatscreen tube (16:9), at £819 (I think - don`t quote me on that), and the 32PK3 is the newer model of the 32PK1. It doesn`t offer anything over the 32PK1, except there is an extra 14:9 aspect ratio on it. Aesthetically it is no different.
