RE: AVG scans

I don`t think continual daily scanning does anything for you... apart from waste 2.5 hrs of system lifetime :)

Get a product that can scan all sources of input (Floppy, USB, CD/DVD, Internet & Mail) and never skip scanning them. Use a router with NAT enabled and back that up with a firewall (if you must!). Your PC should now not have any way to received unsolicited data which will not be scanned. You can/should back that confidence up once in a while with a full scan (program containers only) but if you religiously scan all inputs, there cannot be a virus :)

Personally I didn`t find AVG (AV only) did a very good job on blocking bad Internet payloads - it seemed to leave that to the active [file] scanner...

RE: AC DC/ Rock N Roll Train from their new album Black Ice

It`s sounds like classic [Johnson] AC/DC - so nothing new but in this case, I`m all for it! Anything pre Who Made Who (`86) back to Let There Be Rock (`77) I know well , I just lost touch with their stuff later on for one reason or other so I hope the new release is [as] good!

Never seen them live so will hopefully try to arrange something this time round - did the same for Queensyrche this year (Mindcrime I/II tour) which was a great `experience`.

RE: Metallica

I prefer Metallica`s black album as [for me at least] their earlier stuff was a bit thrashy and the later stuff just too non descript.

The new CD comes across like a toned down old school (i.e. pre black) Metallica sound which I didn`t find terribly inspiring. "The Day That Never Comes" could have been a cross genre classic but from 05:00 it`s like another track got nailed on the end :(

Nothing on the CD stood out and though there were good vocal/drum/guitar elements, it just didn`t come across as great (even after half a dozen plays). Grabbed it on digital download (£8) so don`t even have a coffin to show for it :(

RE: ***Dr 42%er*** wh smith charging 1p for a carrier bag

I`m in agreement with charging for bio-degradable bags. In fact it should be those bags or no bags! M&S have been charging 5p for bags for months now... I asked if they were bio-degradable and the answer was "I don`t know". Man alive, planet before profits please!

RE: XP media center edition.. any good?

Having used XP MCE (2005) for 2 years and now Vista Home Premium for just over a year now I`d have to say that on balance the Vista edition is better (read I`ve encountered less issues with it!). It`s a new machine but both clean installs by myself with same TV card in both.

XP MCE is a very good baseline but the Media Center bit seemed to `act up` on occasion. The Vista MC interface looks a bit worse (cluttered) but overall it seems to behave a little better. I did recently lose the ability to `Sleep` - when it resumed the TV signal is nowhere to be seen :( I`ve now switched to Hibernating which is almost as good (slower restart time) but works.

Vista itself, well I dislike pretty much most of the changes Microsoft made - nearly all are of no benefit, glass is an over-hyped feature, performance is terrible unless you stick loads of RAM in (I`m running 2GB with Vista and was running 512MB with XP MCE). Lots of people love it (looks driven) and almost as many hate it (must be a Marmite product!). Me, well I wouldn`t want to upgrade my main PC with it :)

RE: Can you tell me the site to sign up for phone privicy

I`ve been registered for years. You will still get some calls however, just say you`re on the TPS and that they should remove your number from their system. Sky (if you`re a customer) in particular seem to ignore the TPS setting and then further requests not to call :( It`s probably in their T&C`s that they can call you?!

RE: sky broadband

I don`t have Sky myself but that statement contradicts a friend who has Sky and uses VPN access to work through the provided router. Sounds like you may have other issues - or a VPN client that probably will not play ball with many routers...

RE: Help Emergency Dentist

Had the same a few years back, had to wait for 3.5 hours at a drop in centre staffed by `up and coming` dentists. The guy I had wanted to pull the tooth (which I wasn`t keen at all with) and luckily he thought otherwise once he`d drilled away the mess. Cost me £10 and it was only enough to tied me over until I could go to my regular dentist (who then charged a stack more to drill out the temp stuff and do it properly).

Certainly wouldn`t `recommend` it per se - as I wasn`t expecting a temporary solution - but I felt so much better afterwards!

RE: 24 - Series 5 (The last series shown) half price

Only ever ordered twice from them... both times the item never appeared (cancelled). Consequently wouldn`t bother with them whatever the price.

RE: Star Trek Next Generation DVD Question

The slimline packages contain the exact same content as the previous plastic box releases. Extras are there but from memory they aren`t massively overwhelming :)
