Would touch a P4 Celeron with a bargepole....

The P4 core is dependent on memory and cache bandwidth. The original P4 core (willamette) was crippled with only 256Kb L2 cache. P4`s only started giving good performance when the Northwood Core with 512Kb L2 cache came out.

The P4 Celeron`s only have 128Kb L2 cache :o

When the 2.0GHz Celeron came out Tom`s Hardware benchmarked it and even when it was overclocked to 3.0GHz it was regularly trounced in the tests by an AMD XP1800+ - not good.

(I`m not anti Intel - I`m using a P4 2.4B@ 2.93 at the moment).

128Mb -> 256Mb RAM worth £40 - I think not. 256Mb DDR costs between £20 and £30.
128Mb is around £12.

Also remember that XP really wants a minimum of 256Mb for itself, so for heavy apps you`d be wanting 384-512Mb

Never been a fan of onboard graphics - slows your system down. a) it steals RAM from the system. b) when it is the graphics is accessing the RAM it is restricting access for the other system components.

They haven`t even supplied a CD writer. To a consumer the difference is only a few quid so to Dell the cost would be next to nothing. Probably shifting old stock.

Not such a good deal really, then is it. A local computer store could probably do something better for the same price. (Okay you get Dell support but Watchdog said it was terrible last week, as is their delivery).

Still better than my tired old Celeron 466 with 128 ram, thats what im used to so the above machine would perform like a rocket ;)

It`ll suit some people and not others.

Nothing like shooting the original poster down in flames!! ;)

Personally (using a Celeron 600mhz) I think it`s not a bad package, OK it`s not state of the art but for running XP, Office and a few graphics packages (which is what I use mine for) I think it would be a pretty useful machine. AND you get a 17" monitor thrown in for the price so all in all it`s not a bad deal IMHO.

:) :)

Ahh c`mon you`re getting a complete system for not a lot.
You want to play the latest games at the highest resolutions? Don`t bother.
You want a PC that will handle all your word processing, internet and other everyday stuff? Go ahead, I can`t see it getting much cheaper than that.

As for the Celeron, sure it isn`t the fastest chip but it`s gonna do a whole lot better than a P3-550.

Makes me want to post more bargains so people can take the p***. OK its not everybodys cuppa tea, but its cheap and easy on the pocket, not everyone had a truck load of dough to spend on a PC ;)

Thanks Dusty, this looks like a bargain! The price is excellent for this spec PC.
I am considering getting one for my daughter (9) for homework, school projects, internet (net nanny), etc. However, need to save a bit more dosh first, but this a good deal.
Well done Dusty, keep the bargains coming.
