Does anyone have a link explaining what all the different camcorder formats are and the pros and cons?

Try here - it might help.

Hi8 is an analogue format and, as such, is pretty ageing technology, which is probably why the camera`s so cheap. It all depends on what you`re looking to do with it, I guess. My camera`s a Digital 8 which records digitally onto Hi8 tapes.

EDIT - I think the camcorder in question is this Medion Hi8 one. I really can`t say I`m familiar with it.

8) :) for the price its a bargain! i have a panasonic digi camcorder, but it only has optical zoom of x10 while this one has x22. there is nothin wrong with hi8,you can still get tapes and the quality will be good. medion is a decent brand, expect its a badge on a perfectly acceptable camera from another brand. its ideal for holidays, home use or whatever! if i hadnt picked up my panasonic from the argos fiasco ie. £100 instead of £350 i would deffo go for this!

The photo on the website looks a lot like the Samsung unit Dixons were selling for £120 around Christmas time. Could well be a Samsung OEM.

The camera does indeed appear to be a samsung - it appears to be model VPW70 that`s selling for around £180 on the web so a bit of a bargain. I`ve just ordered one so cannot comment on the quality yet but does seem to be the bargain of the year.

In my case it`s to replace an ancient and rather large Canon E-430 Low-8mm camcoder that won`t record or play tapes any more (and with only a 6x zoom the repair costs aren`t worth it when new machines are this cheap) so I`m hoping the medion can at least play standard 8mm even if record turns out to be hi-8 only.
