Canon MVX200i MiniDV Camcorder. £199 and free delivery..

Just as the title says: Canon MVX200i Camcorder. £199 Delivered.

Here

I have an MVX200 and it is a fantastic camcorder. The 200i is the next model up and is identical, except additionally it has DVin and an analogue to digital converter.

This is an excellent price. It`s between £100 and £250 dearer elsewhere.

EDIT: I`ve just noticed the link times you out after a while so go HERE and type MVX200i in the search box and it will bring up all the Canon camcorders including the 200i.

Cheers inkitin

I have been looking at digital camcorders for a few weeks now. My main features were dv-in and preferably "true widescreen", apart from obvious build and image quality stuff.

This looks like a good deal and is a fair bit cheaper than the Sony HC42 I am currently looking at. I am seriously tempted.

Do you know if this camcorder can record in "true widescreen"?

Cheers,
Scoobies

Hi Scoobies

Well my MVX200 certainly has the 16:9 widescreen facility, so I don`t see why the 200i shouldn`t as it is essentially the same camera with additional facilities. For some reason the Canon website is silent on this point.

This "review" from Auz also says it has the 16:9 facility, have a look at the specification list. MVX200i

As far as build and image quality are concerned I can only highly recommend it with my experience of the 200.

Good luck whatever you decide to buy.

EDIT: Scoobies. I`ve just noticed Apple Store also have the MVX25i at £299 delivered. On specification, this is in a different class compared to the 200i. It`s well over £500 everywhere else. Maybe better even than the Sony and for less money as well.

I`m also on the look out for new camcorder and am happy to pay a bit more than £199 if need be, but not sure how much or which one to go for. The MVX25i certainly reads well for £299).

A mate of mine has had the MVX500i for a couple of years and is happy with it, says very easy to plug into pc and edit before transferring film and saving it (apple store don`t do it - probably too old a model). Saw MV830i at Jessops site for £279 (+ delivery) which also looks interesting.

Hello again niteowl

Two points for you to consider on the 830i.

Firstly it`s a £300 camcorder for about £300. Perhaps the 20x optical zoom is important to you?

Secondly my previous camcorder was an 800,000 pixel one, as is the 830i. I can definitely see the improvement in image quality with my current MVX200, which is 1.33 megapixels, just as the 200i is. The 25i is even better specified at 2.2 megapixels. I know pixel counting isn`t the be all and end all of quality and that lens quality is equally, if not more, important but with canon I think the lens quality can be a given.

If i was considering a new camcorder and had £300 pounds to spend I think you know which one I would be going for.

There is a comparison facility for them all on the Canon website HERE

Good luck, whatever you choose to buy.

Thanks for info Inkitin.

I think I`m going off the 830i. For the difference in extras and price, probably end up going for the MVX200i. As you said you`re getting a £300+ camera for £199 :).

Cheers Niteowl

The other thing to consider, which will save you money on the canons, is the i at the end normally just means its got dv in, unless you are going to put stuff back onto your camera in a digital form back onto the mini-dv tape i.e. old vhs, you might as well go for the model without the i as it has the exactly the same specs and same camera without the dv in and is considerably cheaper.

SHEPPY124

Thanks for your comments and I agree entirely with you regarding DVin and whether it is worth paying extra for this facility. Personally, I wouldn`t pay extra as I transfer all my video onto DVD via my computer. Ultimately, though, I have found the best quality is maintained by recording back to MiniDV tape on the camcorder and playing back on TV, via the camcorder. Convenience however pushes me towards the DVD route.

I might be wrong but I don`t think the MVX25i has an equivalent model without the "i". In the case of the MVX200i there is an equivalent, the MVX200 which is the model I have. The cheapest I can find the MVX200, at the moment, is over £300. So the 200i at £199 and the MVX25i at £299 are still excellent prices, even against the MVX200.

Best Regards

Hi niteowl

Well, I suppose what I really meant was that, personally, I would go for the MVX25i. However I was assuming no other use for the £100 difference in price, you were actually considering an alternative, the 830i, at nearly £300.

My priority would always be, with budget in mind, the quality of the video and simplicity of use. Your priorities might be different?

I would definitely be unimpressed with any digital zoom claims as I have found digital zooms a useless facility (Hand shake and detrioration of image quality!!). An optical zoom of 14X is more than enough for me. (Thus my comment on the 830i`s 20X zoom).

Try the comparison facility on the Canon site, if you haven`t already. I don`t pretend to understand it all but you may be able to identify your priorites there.

Hope this helps.

Thanks all for good advise.

I was thinking of spending around £500 ish for a camcorder (don`t know what models I should be looking for in that range). Yes I have loads of VHS home movies to transfer onto DVD, but am doing this slowly via VHS player direct onto liteon DVD recorder (no real editing). Unfortunately I don`t have facilities on my pc do do any editing etc. I hadn`t considered recording them onto the mini DV and then onto DVD (maybe I should consider this too?).

I`ve looked at the canon comparison site and searched on a few other sites too (i.e. Amazon, say they don`t have the MVX25i, maybe discontinued or out of stock.; Jessops don`t seem to stock either the MVX200i or the MVX25i). Looking at it again, the MVX25i comes up very well.

Also I borrowed a mates SONY DCR-HC22E, to take some indoor footage (on tripod) and transfer it onto DVD - I wasn`t over exited about the zoom buttons on the screen still a bit fast and jumpy, but final image quality was fairly good.

My priority for this camera are (and in no particular order) image quality, particularly under poor indoor lighting and bright sunlight; zoom facility; sound qualitity; compact small size camcorder; stabililty when shooting movie; long battery life; useful to have but not essential a decent photo mode and dvi facility.

This thread sounded great an MVX200i camera for £199, (or even the other Canons). I was hoping to decide and order quickly, rather than spend too much time looking into things and delay the purchase. The Apple store site seems a good one, so (takes deep breath) based on what I`ve read I`ll go for the MVX25i (even though its been discontinued - the other models i.e. MVX45i cost more and don`t necessarily do what I want).

Cheers for the link and help. Niteowl
