I don`t want to sound sneery, but how many people are likely to want an expensive dialup-only, no downloads, no Real, no QuickTime, no Windows Media, no firewall version of teh Interweb?

Even at £5, it`s too high tech for my dad & possibly for THO`s mother.

I consider myself an optimist, albeit an optimist with cynical tendencies and a dark side that Lucifer himself would find a little creepy. (Perhaps you've noticed.) You don't normally associate cynicism with an upbeat pov. But I have exactly that combination and will defend it.

DO they tie you into a particular ISP or could you use the Fast4 unlimited dialup access for £6.99/month for instance ?

Probably but there`s probably a way around that.

I`ve had one of these for about 4 years now. They were only a tenner then, so a fiver isn`t that great a deal. It`s good that this pack includes the proper keyboard, because typing on the remote control keypad is a nightmare! They`re great to get on the net in an emergency, like when your hard drive fails without warning. The number it dials is embedded in the firmware and you can`t change it. It actually verifies you based on the number you dial out from, so you don`t need to log-in as such. The thing is VERY basic, and only has 40-bit SSL, so forget using it for online banking or shopping. Text is very hard to read on a TV, and many sites are unusable because they don`t fit on the screen properly. The OS it runs is a form on Linux, and the browser is some freebie Linux thing. I think it also has basic Java, but pop-ups don`t work. It has a connection for a printer, but this is parallel and there`s no USB. The built-in printer driver is only for a couple of specific ink-jets, which are long gone.

These are *really* old stock. IIRC they had model numbers like IBX101 and IBX102. Operating system is a cut-down version of RISC-OS and not Linux. There is a hidden keyboard short-cut that allows you to change the dial-up phone number, and also the email webpage details.

Comes with a nice 6VDC stabilised power supply IIRC.

Edited to remove reference to POP3 and SMTP - the IBX260 doesn`t have these !

Google is your friend......

If you simply want to change the service provider you use that can be achieved very simply.

The process shouldnt be started unless you have all the required details for changing ISP. The steps are

* Ensure you are on the main screen "World Wide Web" and "Options"
* Type the password1 "39d8sk43k2" for the IBX101 or "012603belt" for the IBX260.
* Enter the details for your isp, required details are:
ISP name The name that appears on screen when dialling
ISP telephone number The Telephone number to dial
User name The user name of your ISP account
Password The password of your ISP account
Home URL A URL the browser opens at start time
ISP domain name The domain name of your ISP, usualy the same as appers to the right of the `@` symbol in your ISP provided email address
Primary DNS Primary DNS server of your ISP, enter as a dotted quad
Secondary DNS The backup DNS server of your ISP again a dotted quad
Dial Script
E-mail URL URL used when selecting the email feature
Search URL URL used when selecting the search feature
Time server Used to set the correct time
HTTP This is the http proxy server of your ISP
FTP This is the ftp proxy server of your ISP

You do this entirely at your risk.

More details here, here & part II dealing with the RISC OS & working outside its original intended function.
