Pipex ADSL £30 a month, no set up fee, £120 Modem required....

Pipex have thrown down the gauntlet on 512K ADSL pricing with the cheapest deal yet. I will be moving on to this very very shortly, but I`m hanging back for an anticipated BT announcement tomorrow about broadband prices being cut generally.

http://www.dsl.pipex.net is where you need to go - you can check availability in your region on line, but it`s also worth checking at BT to see how far your house is from the exchange (over 5.5km and it`s a no go, sadly...)

Musts :

(1) Curently have your phone with BT
(2) Have a modem : agreeable ones are Alcatel Speedtouch USB, Fujitsu FSX310 (try http://www.aa.nu - about £100 inc VAT ) or if you have more than one PC in the house an Asus 6000EV router. You can buy the Alcatel from Pipex but it will set you back £120 - however, they do throw in two free micro-filters with that (which are essential as you can then make voice calls at the same time as being online)

Costs :

(1) A few pennies shy of £30 a month
(2) No connection fee
(3) All Internet call charges are included in the 30

The Modem connects via USB and needs no external power source.

This really is a good deal, and I for one will be taking the plunge. Sadly my ISPs have changed their T & Cs from 56 hours a week for £7.99 to a measley 25 hours (just ain`t enough) so rather than go thru the aggro of changing to yet another ISP (my fourth in 15 months) I`m going for broadband.

Clayts,

Where did you hear about BT cutting their broadband prices? Do you know if this anticipated price cut is for existing customers or not?

Cheers,
r8sso

Just keep an eye on the news/Working Lunch on Thurs/Friday :-)

No, no secret about it actually. The new Chief Exec is making a big speech tomorrow and it seems that he wants to move forward on broadband : maybe Oftel`s dentures have finally bit into BT a little...

It is widely anticipated in the industry that the wholesale BT price will reduce considerably. However, expect some ISPs to be in up in arms about it as their profit margins will undoubtedly get savaged by this price cut. There are also indications that there may have to be an Office of Fair Trading enquiry if enough ISPs complain about it.

So, hats off to Pipex for saying "sod it" and just going for it.

Anyone thinking about adsl I would definately recommend you buy a router over a normal modem.

I have more than one pc so a router was more beneficial to me but even if you only have one pc there are still many reasons for a router including it is much more stable than a modem, it doesnt use your pc`s resources like a usb or pci modem will and a router is much much more secure - you can say goodbye to zonealarm or norton firewall blocking messages.

I think BT is panicking since Blue Yonder is beating BT by a mile, i only pay £25.00 per month, i paid £25.00 for installation which included the cost of a cable modem (you do need a network card which i borrowed from work, but you can easily pich them up for under £15.00. Surfing has never been the same especially when combined with download accelerator. Welcome to the revolution everyone
