Possible incompatibility - `Drive`

Arf (Competent) posted this on Thursday, 1st August 2002, 21:31

I`m having problems with the director`s cut of `Drive` starring Mark Dacascos (region 2). So far I`ve bought 4 copies; all of them seize up at exactly the same point on my home player and in the PC drives at my workplace.

I remember when I bought my player (Wharfedale 750) a couple of years ago I saw some discs advertised as incompatible with certain hardware. Does anyone know of any problems with the above disc and player or am I just incredibly lucky, having bought 4 dodgy copies in a row? I`m getting sick of asking for refunds. Thanks.

Isn`t Drive RCE? That might have something to do with it.

He says region 2 so i doubt its rce unless his player is region one. cant think why it would always seize at the same point though. But if it was rce it wouldnt even play.

Thanks for the replies. This is my first post on these forums so please bear with me - I don`t know what RCE means. My player is region 2 according to the manual (bought at Tesco in UK) but by punching a code on the handset I can play other region discs. I have discs from regions 1 and 3 and have had no problems with any other discs.

As for the offending film Drive - the first 2 copies were purchased from an HMV high street store, the third from their website. Thinking then that perhaps HMV had bought up all the defective copies I bough the fourth from a different source, but with the same result. All seize at exactly the same frame, and there is also some corruption of video at the distributor`s logo (Medusa) when the disc is first inserted.

Well RCE means region code enhanced, to try to stop say uk machines playing american discs. so it obviously not that then if you bought from HMV

Does your player have problem with any of your other discs? if not, then its more than likely the disc, dont know why though. Im sure some of the more techie people here will have an answer for you so hold tight.

I have been liasing with HKL about the problems with Drive over the last month. There is a major manufacturing fault with this title, which means that 99% of copies on sale won`t play past the layer change the picture breaks up or refuses to play so ch29 the last before the end credits is unwatchable.

Please look at my threads here for more info

I`m afraid you have little hope of getting a working version in the near future

This was a fairly common problem with the Samsung 709 and several ingenious solutions were found. You could try to hit the next scene button, the pic search button, the menu button or even the stop button then play or menu or something like that. I don`t know wheather any of these can help but a lot of the problems like this were corrected with a software upgrade so a look at the Warfedale website might help.

Thanks a lot Malcy, at least I can stop buying it now (just got a refund on my fourth attempt), at least until I know there are working copies in circulation.

I went to watch my copy of Drive, and thankfully it`s okay. It plays fine, even after the noticeable layer change at 1:37:22. Mind you, I borrowed it from a friend before buying my own copy, and both are fine. I have an Arcam AV88.

The disc was made by Nimbus.
