How do you know if a disc has RCE protection? Tosh 220 won`t play R1 disc.

My brother has bought a Tosh 220 Multi-region player. He`s just bought Lilo and Stitch R1 and it won`t play at all. He doesn`t have another R1 disc to try. I said either it`s not multi-region (although that`s what he ordered and was on the box) or it could be that it won`t play RCE discs even though I thought it could. I`m gonna try one of my R1 discs in it and see but won`t be able to until the weekend. So how can you tell if it has RCE on it? I`ve also heard there are newer types of RCE appearing that some players can`t play. True?
Is there somewhere on the web that tells you if the disc has it?

Lots of Q`s, sorry. Any answers??

According to Play.com, Lilo and Stitch is a non-RCE title. And they`re usually pretty good when it comes to technical information.

Hope this helps.

Cheers. Where would it have said so?
This must mean that it isn`t multi-region. Strange `cos it was packaged (and paid for) as one.

Warner and Columbia are the ones who put RCE to Region 1 DVD's.

I`ve got a few RCE discs and I`ve yet to find any symbols/markings denoting that the DVD is an RCE title.

Like you say, there must be a problem with your brother`s player.

If he intends buying a lot of Region 1 titles the only sure-fire way of avoiding problems with RCE discs is to buy a player that allows you the option of changing region manually.

Best of luck. D

sj,
Tosh players do have some problems with RCE but it`s this line in your message:
****I said either it`s not multi-region (although that`s what he ordered and was on the box)*****
that makes me think you may be correct in that the problem is that it`s not multiregion. Toshiba are one of the manufactures whose DVD players are not easy to make multiregion, I know recently a software hack was found but I do not think it would say multiregion on the box. Where did your brother get the player from and is there a sticker on the box saying multiregion or proper printing?

Steve..

He got it from webelectricals.co.uk as multi-region. It`s obviously not proper printing (on the box) as such `cos Tosh don`t sell them. But the box was bound with a tape saying `multi-region`. I don`t know how they do it - the hack or a chip. The hack (Nero file) only really appeared just after he`d bought it but often retailers have them first...
My player has a menu where you can choose the region (although it`s never been needed - always set to bypass). When you buy a Toshiba or something else that needs `specialist` chipping (i.e.not a supermarket special), do you get the option of changing regions or are they supposed to auto-detect??

Cheers all,

Ste

Tell him to select set-up on the remote control and
where it says PAL / AUTO in the picture settings make
sure that it is set to AUTO. He then shouldn`t have a problem
as my 220 has so far played everything I`ve thrown at it -
including Lilo and Stich.
