Additional MGM Dvds with the clouding/ dvd rot problem
Having just come out of hibernation, I just noticed the Terminator/ SOTL thread and checked my discs...sure enough there is a problem and i`ll be returning them.
However , I noticed an earlier thread from Mark Oates who mentions additional discs.. including Rocky Boxset - MGM, The Good the Bad & the Ugly (2nd pressing) - MGM, Some like it Hot - MGM
I checked these discs and they are also cloudy to some extent...however the phone message doesn`t mention an option for their return. anyone had playback problems with these other discs or returned them? I know a lot of you are concerned abou the rocky boxset. Cheers guys.

On seeing your thread I checked my DVD`s and was pleased to find that all was ok, I have over 200 so I got a bit worried but all of them are in good order. Many thanks for the warning though.
RE: Additional MGM Dvds with the clouding/ dvd rot problem-Rocky 3
checked my rocky boxset yesterday. sure enough, major problems with rocky 3. film freezes up during chapter 9 and won`t play....not so much evidence of the dvd rot effect though. washing it in soapy water as suggested in an earlier thread doesn`t work. anyone else had this problem and returned the discs?

To date, the only titles which M.G.M. have admitted were faulty are `Silence Of The Lambs` and `The Terminator.` These discs were manufactured on their behalf by a company known as Technicolor, William Brown Close, Llantarnam Park, Cwmbran, Gwent NP443AB. Numerous other titles manufactured by this company on behalf of M.G.M. and other studios have the same problem but neither Technicolor nor the studios concerned will admit to same. You could write to M.G.M. at 5 Kew Road, Richmond, Surrey TW92PR, but do not hold your breath waiting for a reply. I wrote a letter of complaint to them on 2 September, 2002, and only received a reply yesterday.
As far as I am aware, Technicolor still manufacture all M.G.M. titles.

cheers hugh,
noticed the same misting problem with my `the good, the bad and the ugly` disc today. played it right the way through and it was fine. do you know if these other discs have eventually been reduced to the unplayable levels of s.o.l.t. and the terminator? also, what did mgm say in the reply to your letter?

RE: Additional MGM Dvds with the clouding/ dvd rot problem-Rocky 3
I returned my faulty copies of `Silence Of The Lambs` and`The Terminator` and, to date, the replacement copies are showing no sign of clouding and/or misting.
At the same time as I returned the above, I checked the remainder of my d.v.d. collection and the only other disc I found which had the same problem was `Bound` which was manufactured by Technicolor on behalf of 20th Century Fox/Pathe. Since I was not being afforded the opportunity to return this disc, I gently cleaned the playing surface using a cold water/diluted washing up liquid mix and a spectacle cleaning cloth. This removed the clouding/misting and, so far, it has not returned. The disc is still playable.
Numerous people posted on the DVDTimes Forums stating that their discs were unplayable. However, I do not know if any of them attempted cleaning the discs and, if so, what results they achieved.
Re M.G.M., they simply apologised for the delay in responding and requested that I return the faulty discs which they stated they would replace. They made no comment re my allegation that numerous other titles manufacured on their behalf by Technicolor were suffering from the same clouding/misting issue.

how can washing the disc help if the misting and clouding is within the discs layers? I am going to check my collection for technicolour pressings. Surely trading standards should be notified if discs aren`t fit for their intended purpose etc etc.

Hugh,
Typical corporate behaviour by the sounds of it....as in admitting no responsibility. At least they`re doing the decent thing and replacing certain discs. Still, if enough people complain about other faulty mgm discs, I`m sure that they will have to bow to public pressure again. Guess we`ll have to keep on checking our technicolor discs...

I spoke to someone at MGM about Rocky boxset when this first came to light.
He said to send it in, but I was waiting to hear if anyone else had, and I hadn`t got my Terminator or Silnce back then!
They all seem to play OK, but 3 films cloudy!

I may be missing something but I would have thought the dealers were the first port of call ( if purchased in the UK ) with faulty goods under the sale of goods act.
