The Shining vs The Shining

The Stephen King version is out on Feb 10th. So I am wondering which version do you prefer Kubricks or Kings?

Also what do you think of the tele series based on Kings books? Are there good or dire?

Personally the dire outweghes the good, in fact I can`t remember seeing a good tv series based on Kings books, after IT, Tommy Knockers, I have been hugely disappointed.

By the King version do you mean the one that was in the video shops spread over a few tapes?

I`ve not seen that version, I thought the Kubrick version was good, but I saw it shortly after I`d read the book and it is not a patch on the book.

I much prefer the TV Movie version of "The Shining" (i.e. King`s version). It sticks more to the action in the book, and I`ve NEVER liked Kubrick version at all - all style, no substance!

But which Kubrick version? the UK cut or the US cut? never seen the US one but i`m intrigued as to whether the extra bits feature storylines from the book or just extended versions?

The King adaptation is pretty poor, although fans of the book will find a lot more fidelity to the novel than in Kubrick`s version, which, to be fair, isn`t supposed to be a strict adaptation of the book (that`s why it`s called "Stanley Kubrick`s The Shining".) There are always myths and mysteries about different versions of Kubrick films as he was in the habit of re-editing his films after their first screenings, however, as far as I know, both the British and American versions are the same.

Not so, Mike. The US cut is approximately 30 minutes longer. A list of the cuts made by Kubrick to the UK release is detailed in the following link: http://www.visual-memory.co.uk/sk/films/cutshining.htm All these scenes are contained in the region 1 DVD.

I`ve just checked the link in the last reply and I`m sure that the longer version has cropped up on TV quite regularly
