cloudy and poor technicolour pressings

Rex Hamilton as Abraham Lincoln (Competent) posted this on Wednesday, 22nd January 2003, 23:25

I have had "phenomenon" for about 6 months now, still sealed. I opened it and played it and there was dolby digital dropout and pixellations all over the place. I had a look at the disc, and there was the now common fog all over it - the same as the other bad pressings from the company. Seems they print discs for momentum, beuna vista and mgm. I have checked a few technicolour discs and they all have a fog to some extent on them.Do you think the shop will exchange them? I don`t have the reciepts. How many more discs have I got that are bad? Not a good thought to go to bed on! So much for the format that will never deteriorate.

know the feeling frank.
technicolor seem to get around a bit as they are producing discs for many companies.
i have a few discs which are several years old and have fogging on them. however they still play fine...guess we have to hope that there is a point reached whereby if the discs still play we can rest easy.
otherwise, bring on the revolution.
judging by earlier threads, mgm will replace discs other than the terminator and s.o.t.l. but won`t advertise this fact...wonder why?! this seems to take a lot of effort and the odd letter.
keeping my fingers crossed for a healthier dvd future..
kozza.

There are currently two problems affecting *some* Technicolor discs, details of which are available through this thread:
The problems are 1) "Misting" or "Foggy" discs. This is normally solved by washing and at the time of writing not a serious problem.
2) "Bubbling" or "Sticky" discs. This is a different issue and is not resolved by cleaning. Discs suffering this problem need to be replaced, and the links given in the above thread to other forums may help.

the mist and fog is within the dvd`s layers. washing won`t help

The problem with discs which are discoloured and sticky to the touch can be resolved by cleaning/washing. I cleaned my copy of `Bound` using this method several months ago and the problem has not returned. The disc plays perfectly.

Re the misting and fogging on discs, I believe Frank Drebin is correct when he states that this occurs between the layers and washing has no effect whatsoever.

just read your comments ,not come acroos this before
so i have just checked my terminator discs
and they have this clouding all over ,like condensation

does this mean it will not play

"and why won,t they replace it"

MGM will replace it. I still have to send mine away too, and worse thing is I have KNOWN for ages. I have the "mist" problem, and the other day I checked and the film pixelates a lot now.

Who has the number that we phone?

Thanks in advance :-)

The thing is I have a lot of technicolour discs ( about 30) and most of them are slightly foggy. Will they get worse and unplayable? In a years time I might be left with a load of pretty and expensive coasters (and spare boxes!) I am going to ring hmv to see what they will do with my phenomenon disc that pixellates. That is the only problematic one I have at the mo. Terminater 1 and 2 are slightly foggy but they are fine - for now anyway.
STOP PRESS - I called hmv and they will exchange it no problem. I don`t have a reciept either. Thats service.

I`ve just had a look at my `Terminator` disc and noticed that it has that clouding effect on it! The same goes with the bonus disc but I havent noticed it on other MGM discs. I also tried it in my player but works as per normal - no problems!

Will this disc become un-playable in time though?

"Will this disc become un-playable in time though?"

Sadly, yes. I have the same problem though.
