Dog Soldiers R2 - Grainy Pic?

Jonpy (Competent) posted this on Tuesday, 4th March 2003, 14:06

Just watched my new copy of Dog Soldiers R2 and couldn`t get over how grainy the picture was. I know it`s a low budget film an` all but it`s so noticable I`m thinking it may be a problem with my disc.

Anyone else got this title and can confirm/deny that the graininess of the film is just the way it was shot?

Cheers,

J.

The reason why the picture is so grainy is because it was shot on digital video just like 28 days later. I saw Dog soldiers in the cinema and it was exactly the same as the dvd so there is nothing wrong with your disc.

No, Dog Soldiers was NOT shot on digital video. It was a low budget film, so they used super 16mm film stock, and for the cinema release blew it up onto 35mm. This is why it is grainy.

It`s grainy on all regions (i`ve got the R1), so I agree with chewie as that sounds like a good explanation.

I never thought mine was grainy either until I saw this thread. But the film has a certain "grit" to it, the same way that Saving Private Ryan had, or maybe more accurately, The Evil Dead (which was also shot in 16mm). So its not grainy as such, just a bit more raw. It definitely adds to the atmosphere though.

I`m actually writing my review for DS right now, and when it comes to the visuals, I think the quality of them is high considering a) this is a desired effect and b) budget constraints.

I will lose no sleep over giving it an 8 in this area, as I feel it is very accomplished in the key areas. And yes, just like Saving Private Ryan for example, the raw effect only adds to the tone of the film.

I seem to remember there was a thread about the R1 (or was it R3?) version of Dog Soldiers that was going cheap at CD-WOW, and people said to hold out for the R2 version as the picture quality wasn`t much cop.

Does this mean that we now know the picture is supposed to be like that, and has anyone compared the R2 picture to the other versions?
