The Coen`s work - where to begin?

RWB (Elite) posted this on Tuesday, 11th March 2003, 17:45

I have seen The Man Who Wasn`t There, and enjoyed it a lot, and with the upcoming release of Fargo, I need advice on which ones to buy/see first.

Thanks in advance. :)

The problem is that very few of them have had decent (if any!) DVD releases so far, fortunately that`s starting to change.

`O Brother Where Art Thou?` is available in a 2 disc Region 2 SE, which I have seen quite cheap in a few places.

As you mentioned, `Fargo` is soon to be released in a R2 SE.

`Blood Simple` (Their first film) is available in a Director`s Cut with commentary on Region 1

`Barton Fink` and the magnificent `Miller`s Crossing` are both getting Region 1 releases soon (with extras)

The rest - `Raising Arizona`, `The Big Lebowski` and `The Hudsucker Proxy` are only available in bog-standard, extras-free editions.

Doesn`t really matter which one you choose to see next, if you liked `The Man Who Wasn`t There`, chances are you won`t be disappointed by any of them!

I have the french release of Barton Fink, but it has burnt in french subtitles on the english language soundtrack (but no subtitles on the french dub), so hold on for the region 1 version. All their films are worth buying, and I can`t wait for Miller`s Crossing.

To their credit, they`re not in the habit of repeating themselves, so it`s hard to tell you where to go from there. Personally, I`d go for `Blood Simple` and `The Big Lebowski`.

It`s all down to personal taste - and mine puts Fargo as their number 1 film. Which is nice, because it`s also probably the most accessible of their films.

For me, The Big Lebowski is their best movie.... closely followd by The Man Who Wasn`t There.

The Region 1 version of the Big Lebowski has a good interview with the Coen`s which is not on region 2 version.

For something darker like MWWT try Blood Simple or Barton Fink.
For sheer entertainment and a laugh try Raising Arizona, Oh Brother or the vastly underrated Hudsucker Proxy.
For some typically idiosyncratic Coens, try Fargo, Big Lebowski or Millers Crossing.
Whatever you try just make sure you try them all!

Absolutely agree with my learned friend Cuba Boy, Fargo is magnificent in it`s simplicity.
A film I have watched many times and my order for the new DVD has been in since it was announced.
