PAL
625 Lines
25 FPS
50 Interlaced fields a second

NTSC
525 Lines
29.97 FPS
59.94 fields a second

Plus Pal has the exact opposite colour information on every alternate line so any error in colour information is automatically cancelled out by an exact opposit error on the next line

There are probally other people on the forum who can explain better

Thanks for that Eggman but to be honest it means nothing to me, lol. Is there a noticable difference visually?

I have found that watching the first few scenes of Donnie Darko helps show the difference....in that the bike ride at the beginning is jerky on R1 (NTSC) and nice and smooth on R2 (PAL)..this, to me, shows the difference between the two systems.

I know I`ll probably be accused of dodgy eyesight, but on the vast majority of NTSC disks in my collection, I notice horizontal lines reducing the overall resolution... this is particularly evident on movies filmed in black and white. Do I really need contact lenses, or is this a real drawback of the NTSC format? It surely can`t be my player or TV... they both claim to be compatible and together cost over £1,800!!! Help anyone?

NTSC R1 DVD`s do seem to be a bit jerky, for quality I prefer R2, Ihave a few R3`s and the quality of those are excellent,I think people go for R1`s because of release dates and extras.

Yep, NTSC `judder` ensures that PAL remains a better quality experience. Speak to Chewie, he always used to bang the drum for PAL`s superiority, and although he has gone to the Dark Side recently he does still agree PAL is better IIRC.

Forgive me for being naive, but surely NTSC`s 30fps should be smoother than
PAL`s 25fps? :/

Plus, 60Hz is easier on the eye than 50Hz?

btw, I`ll agree with the horizontal lines being visible.

Ste.

I can`t say I`ve ever noticed this "jerkiness" with NTSC titles, but I can see the horizontal lines. My player (Samsung 511) has a NTSC - PAL converter, though, which gets rid of these lines. :)

Unfortunately, it won`t work on films with a follow-the-white-rabbit type feature. :(

Expect the worst and you won`t be disappointed!

In the video industry, NTSC is rumoured to mean `Never Twice the Same Colour`.
PAL is always preferable to NTSC. Ever wondered why the R1 Discs can hold more extras?

But Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and if you`re OK with it then don`t let any scientists tell you different... :/
