ALIEN LEGACY

UNBREAKABLE (Competent) posted this on Wednesday, 7th March 2001, 23:56

l just saw Alien3 for the first time on Sky One (dont laugh) l have been avoiding this film for years as l knew then ending. l only watched it because David (SE7EN, FIGHT CLUB) Fincher directed it.

Man, the film REALLY Sucks!

lt single-handly destroyed the whole Alien series.

ALIEN - Great monster stalking film
ALIENS - Fab shoot `em up action piece

then ALIEN 3..ugh!

l mean whole point of the final third of ALIENS, Ripley had to rescue Newt without Hicks` help from the alien queen. Cool or what!

Then ALIEN3 opens up with them being dead, which makes the ALIENS a waste of time, everything Ripley done was in vain. And she dies in the end! Totally spoilt the whole series.

lronically, l thought ALIEN:RESSURECTION was good.

l would like to have the Alien legacy box set, but ALIEN 3 screwed it all up for me!

Am l alone thinking ALIEN 3 is the weakest link?

Alien resurrection showed real potential at the start and then someone obviously said"f*** this -lets make this into a comedy".

Alien 3 is actually my favourite of the series.

I can`t understand how someone could say "Ripley dying at the end spoils it" - does every story in movieworld have to have a conventionally happy ending for the main characters? The theme of ultimate triumph through sacrifice has been around at least for 2000 years...

Theres a medieval/monastic atmosphere to the film that appeals (visually and soundtrack), and it is marginally less predictable than Alien (horror movie) and Aliens (vietnam in space). It`s got a touch of `Name of the Rose` in the casting, too.

Alien Resurrection, number 4, lost its way in trying to explore the radical feminist iconography that grew up around the Ripley character. They could`ve have done `Ripley as mother of the beast` rather more subtly - in fact, in the way they did it in Alien 3 death scene. That and its rather ludicrous "GM is bad, scientists are evil" theme...

They`re all watchable, but only get classic status through the dearth of any really decent scifi movies to compete with.

You misunderstand what l said. l don`t mind Ripley dying at the end of A3. Maybe l wasn`t very clear.

What l think spoils the series for me is Hicks and Newt being dead at the beginning of A3. That makes all what Ripley done during ALIENS a waste of time. Ripley dying at the end was just a minor factor in my dislike of the film.

(l actually have an early Alien3 script by William Gibson which has Hicks, Newt and Ripley arriving at a large space station, where of course, the Aliens arrive. Ripley doesnt wake up, Hicks sends her off and he and an older Newt fight Aliens which grew inside various animals. lt was good, very action packed, but without Ripley, it just wasnt Alien!)

I agree with you Mr Breakable, I thought it was a very cheap thing to do when they killed off Hicks and Newt. It just seemed like a lazy way of getting them out of the way so that they could do what they wanted with Ripley in the story. I didnt like the film either and I probably wont like Resurrection, but I will have to wait and see.

I also just think the first 2 are pure classic and that they messed it up from then onwards. It would be cool if they could just forget the that 3 + 4 existed and make a proper 2nd sequel, ignoring the other films to make a complete trilogy of classic films.

Of course they would probably just mess that up and you would end back at square one again. Damn!

Aye.

Actually sat down and watched Alien 3 last night, and I agree with some of the sentiments above that the film doesn`t really fit into the rest of the series, and that it does seem to render Aliens a complete waste of time.

However, if viewed as an isolated film (ie try and forget the first two ever happened, if you can : OK: hard to do considering there are obvious flashbacks with references to Bishop, Newt & Hicks all the way through !) it`s actually a very beautiful film : okay there`s not loads of shoot `em up stuff, but I personally think the fact they defeat the bitch with primitive tools makes it more `believable` somehow.

The self-sacrifice does not ruin the movie - there`s a definite religious undertone to the whole movie (eg cremating Newt & Hicks the same time as the bitch bursts out of the dog), which is in keeping with the director`s work, esp. on Se7en.

OK, it effectively terminated the series, but Hollywood came up with even more unfeasible plot on Resurrection, which for me sucked ass bigtime.

The other thing I like about Alien 3 are the UK actors : see how many you can spot, mostly BBC1 actors like Postlethwaite, Webb, Mantle and so on !

Er.. nice comments, clayts, but l was talking about the series of movies being ruined by A3, and l cannot view it as an "isolated" film, as you say.

And (for the second time) l did not say Ripley dying in the end was what ruined the movie. lt just didnt help any, especially when Resurection was made! The Hicks/Newt deaths are what really ruined it, spoiling all Ripleys hard work in the superior ALIENS.

Characters dying in films don`t generally ruin it for me. ARMAGEDDON is one of my favourites and look what happened there!

Don`t you bloody prats realise that Alien 3 was supposed to be the LAST in the trilogy? Ripley was SUPPOSED to die to end the story.

Newt and Hicks died because that is how the book was written to be. It is SUPPOSED to be a much darker tale than the first 2, that was how it was made.

Christ - some people.
