His name is Tyler Durden, Jack is just a name found in the books in the house on Paper street.

he doesn`t actually have a given name. In the screenplay, he is referred to as The Narrator. As Stanz says, Jack is just some names he reads in some Readers Digest. You could say his name was Cornelius, or Travis etc, as he says in the help groups. Tyler wasn`t his name, that was his other personality I came to that conclusion anyway. AFAIK, his name is never given.

Upon closer analysis, Tyler Durden may be just as false a name as Cornelius et al, Ed`s character has an apartment, a job (which he evidently has had for a while), yet when Marla calls him Tyler on the phone, he`s confused and suprised. Ed`s persona in the film is supposed to be the rational side, whereas Brad`s is the wild side. Ed `created` tyler, so he probably started his relationship with Marla, and began Fight Club under the name of Tyler.

Looks like we`ll never know

The narrator is kind of a Norman Bates character. He`s a schizophrenic, caused by sleep deprevation, stresses at work, and the constant traveling all over America with different time zones, to the point where he doesn`t know who he is.

He`s startin to lose it from the start, when you see flashes of Tyler Durden during the film, trying to break out of his unconscience mind.

Marla is the cause of him to go straight over the edge, as his mind is at conflict with each other, one hates her, the other lusts for her. Norman Bates would of killed her via his alter ego (his mother), where as the narrator vents his anger by fighting or causing total destruction through his alter ego.

Tyler encourages the narrator to hit him as hard as he can, but in reality he`s beating himself up, because he feels he has to punish himself for having impure thoughts for Marla, but when he feels satisfied with punishing himself, his alter ego takes over and shags Marla, and then he punishes himself again, with what he has done.
