Ju-on:The Grudge 1 and 2 What did you think of the films?

floyd_dylan (Elite) posted this on Tuesday, 15th June 2004, 10:32

First things first, I didn`t know that the two films, is actually parts and 4, and 5. The first two previous films are just called Ju-on, and the third film is called Tomie: Re-birth, and none of them are on DVD.

But anyway, I watched the 2 films over a couple of days, and I thought they were good, but very strange, and a bit confusing.

Ju-on:- The Grudge

A very good spooky film, but what confused me, was when SPOILER:
the husband at the end of the film, who kills the social worker. I thought it was the mother and the son, who did all the killing. So how come he`s part of the act, but is never seen again in the second, only in newspaper clippings?

Ju-on: The Grudge 2

You can tell the film was heavily influenced by The Ring, and Dark Water, SPOILER:
the wet patch on the floor, the extreme close-up of the eyeball, the hair covering the girls face, the distorted movements of the mothers, much similar to Sadako`s movements.

Apart from that, I thought it was a good film, and I thought the ending was unexpected, but as in the first film, there were confusing moments such as...

SPOILER:
How come all the nurses and doctors died by the mother, when none of them have been to the house? What was the schoolgirl all about? Did she die in the house, by the mother, or did she die outside? How come the mother was reborn and not the son? What is the significance of the wet patch, when the mother had no need for one in the first film?

Apart from the confusing moments, both films, are very good, and stand well alongside The Ring, Dark Water, The Phone, and The Eye.

The first one is brilliant. Real freaky in places. I`ve watched it a couple of times and it was just as scary the second time, although easier to understand.
A few of us are watching the second one tonight. I`ve heard it`s 1 :o times as scary. Can`t wait!

Have you seen the original TV movie, Ju-on: The Curse ? Best of the bunch in my opinion, for scares anyway.

Although i do think too many of these japanese horrors rely on women with long straggly black hair walking in a weird way to deliver their scares, lol.

I was left confused like you floyd. I just completely lost what was supposed to be going on, and couldn`t work out who was who. It felt a bit like I`d started watching a film half way through. :/

Watched the second one last night, damn it was good (although I think the first one was better for scares :o )

It was a bit confusing

there were times we were like, what the ?

There is a really cool bit that my mates found it hard to notice even when we played the scene a few times (see spoiler below)
SPOILER:
The bit where the guy is watching the recording they made at the house, and falling asleep. When he stands up and moves away, in the black bit at the back of the screen you can briefly see the girl standing there......... :o :o :o

Yeah, they all have similarities (ring etc), that`s not a bad thing, I find the way lifts are used in these films are very very eerie and effective SPOILER:
(although not used in juon2 for any such thing
).

I haven`t seen the tv version, there used to be plagues of dvds on ebay, but they don`t seem to be about anymore...

*EDIT* link removed, blatant copy.

I haven`t seen the tv versions either, I`ve been searchin on all the Japanese/Hong Kong sites, and can`t find anything.

I`ve got a few more Japanese horror movies on the way, which I can`t wait to see, one of them is The Eye 2!!!!

A seller is selling The Curse on ebay here. I don`t know of the aunthentication of the dvds. Were they ever officialy released?

Update, link removed, blatant bootlegs, seller has bad feedback relating to a previous purchase of these films and even states that he added the subtitles himself!!!

Are these the tv versions?

I had a look at those and they`re not, if you click on the deal where you can order both of them, the write up says....

Haven`t yet caught on to the new wave of Japanese horror that is sweeping the world? Well here is your chance to get Juon (The Grudge) and Juon 2 (The Grudge 2) together for a special 10% discount. Some critics have said that Juon is one of the most frightening movies ever made, and Juon 2 ups the ante of terror even further, so don`t miss your chance to get this double dose of terror while supplies last.

Do you feel that after watching a Japanese horror movie, like the Ring, Dark Water, or Ju-On, you don`t want to be left in the house on your own?

The one scene that freaked me out, is in the first one, is SPOILER:
when she switches the television on just for some background noise, and then it goes funny and makes that horrible noise.
That freaked me out a bit, cos I always have that on as background noise.

I feel that the Asian horror movies are more scary than Hollywood, because they rely less on gore and more on the psychological side.
