Page 1 of Personal DVD Viewing LOG w/e Sunday 27th Feb.

The Breakfast Club - Not as good as Ferris Bueller but still a very good movie about who you are and what it's like being a teenager. The dialogue is excellent and the acting is pretty good from people I have only seen in this movie. :)

Once Upon a Time in China - A very good historical kung fu epic set in ancient China; Jet Li is superb as the legend that is Wong Fei-hung. :)
Commentary - Bey Logan and Mark King provide a very good commentary in which Bey Logan (and the audience) learn that Mark King has never seen the movie or any film in which he has starred. :D

Once Upon a Time in China 2 - One of the rare occasions where the sequel is better than the original, OUATIC 2 is visually stunning with excellent martial arts and a story worthy of its ambitions. :D
Commentary - Bey Logan does his stuff which is excellent as always. :D

Once Upon a Time in China 3 - Whilst not as good as the first two, this is a very good movie which finishes off the trilogy well. :)

Apocalypse Now - An extremely ambitious undertaking by Coppolla which succeeds on every level; well written, brilliantly directed and a superb performance by Martin Sheen, Apocalypse Now is a masterpiece. :D

Dark Water - Consistently unnerving, Dark Water is another example that Asian cinema is scarier than Western cinema. I look forward to Hideo Nakata's remake. :D

Kung Fu Hustle - Hilarious stuff once again from Stephen Chow; whilst Shaolin Soccer is more fun, Kung Fu Hustler is a better film IMO in which Chow succeeds in this parody of Western blockbusters. So much fun that I watched it two times in as many days! :)

Heat - Brilliant, an epic movie with superb direction and exceptional acting. :D 8)
Commentary - a real let down with Michael Mann providing a boring commentary which does nothing to increase your understanding of Heat or how it was made. Avoid it and stick to the featurettes. >:(

Citizen Kane - A superb piece of filmmaking, acting, writing and directing. The Academy, not for the first or last time, got it wrong. :D

A Tale of Two Sisters - I've figured it out this time! As with Dark Water, this movie keeps you on edge due to the excellent direction and acting from the principals. :)

Eddie Izzard: Definite Article - IMO, his best gig which is very funny from start to finish. :D

Radiohead: Seven Television Commercials - Whilst the DVD is only short, the videos on this DVD are brilliant. :)

Bush: 1994/1999 - A selection of ten rarely shown videos from a British band that unusually has had better success in the US than in Britain. :)

No Doubt: The Videos 1996-2004 - Gwen Stefani is gorgeous and the amount of hairstyles that she has had is quite incredible, the music is very good and so are the videos. It's a shame that 'play all videos' plays the vignettes when they are in the special features and disrupt the flow of the music. :)

Swimming Pool - Beautifully directed drama by Francois Ozon with Charlotte Rampling as a crime writer who's work in a quiet French house is disturbed by the arrival of Ludivine Sagnier. The two actresses are superb and the film is beautiful to watch. :)

My Top 20 Horror Movies ---- My DVD Collection

Bit of a cinema world tour this week -

Keoma - Superior spaghetti western, directed with a lot of style by Enzo G. Castellari and starring Franco Nero in one of his best roles as a (very hairy) half breed. :)

I Stand Alone - From Gasper Noe director of Irreversible, this film gets inside the head of a racist ex-con former butcher and it`s not a pleasant place to be. This makes you wonder what films are all about - Should they just be entertainment? If so this falls short. Should they be educational? Once again this falls short. Are they art? Maybe this is, as art is often designed to get a reaction from the viewer (just look at the works of Damien Hirst) and this film can`t fail to get a reaction even if its negative. :/

The Hard Word - Australia comedy/thriller that`s short on laughs and thrills. Only Guy Pearce makes this worth watching. :¦

Get Carter - One of Michael Caine`s best and one of the best British thrillers ever made. And, like Alfie, the best acting in the film is a silent scene, in this case where he watches the porn film. :D

House of Flying Daggers - Wasn`t expecting much from this as I was very disapointed with the shallow Hero but it turned out to be superb. There are characters you care about this time and the fight scenes are much better as well. The dts sound was amazing making the most of the wonderful score. :D

The Sweeney Season 3 - `Tomorrow Man` John Hurt guest stars in an episode that has you rooting for the bad guy. :D `Taste of Fear` This is the `full uncut version` and possibly the most violent episode so far. This would have made a good story for the film version instead of the ott political intrigue story they used. :D `Bad Apple` Police corruption story, not a bad episode just not up to the standard of the other two episodes this week. :)

Keoma - great SW. One of my favourites too

Sherlock Holmes Definitive Collection - this is the Rathbone/Bruce 14 film box set recently released in upgraded versions courtesy of UCLA restorers. Some of the stories may not be classic Holmes but Rathbone and Bruce make a great pairing. Good commentaries for some of the films too.

The Iron Horse - John Ford silent movie about the building of the US transcontinental railroad told through the eyes a various characters. A real epic film with great locations and the usual cast of Ford heroes, villains and comedy relief. You can see some of the well known John Ford themes being developed in this early film. Recommended.

Fulltime Killer - I always like Johnny To movies and this one has some great ideas and set pieces in it. The downside is that the 2 central characters are just not interesting enough - one is pretty dull whilst the other is way too over the top - in the end i didnt really care about either of them. A bit of a step backwards when compared to earlier films like The Mission, A Hero Never Dies etc.

Mad Doctor of Blood Island - made in the Philippines with John Ashley as the hero battling against a nasty chlorophyll monster. Tries to develop the characters a bit too much for a b-movie and fails. These films always work a lot better when they stick to the exploitation aspects and minimise the dialogue. Some of some of the violence is actually quite nasty for a 1960s movie.

The Grudge (New version) - This was recommended to me, it was OK, a few jumpy bits, but overall i was left a bit unsatisfied. Reading on the web, it seems there`s a whole folklore of Ju-On/Grudge, lots of backstory and stuff, and I don`t think that was really shown in this version.

Saw - I enjoyed this more than `The Grudge` to be honest, something a bit different, original. Apparantly they`re making a sequel.

Seinfeld (extras) - ploughed through all the featurettes - interesting if you`re a fan. Which I am.

Curb Your Enthusiasm S1 - Only watched 2 episodes so far, but I like it. You`d have to watch it really to know what it`s like. If you know what I mean.

Quiet week for me.

Dr Strangelove: Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb - Quite good, funny and worringly accurate, even today. First time I`ve seen the film. :)

Ray - Good if not great film, but Jamie Foxx deserved the Oscar. I`ll watch this a few times though because, well, it`s got lots of good music in the film (obviously) :D

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow: An enjoyable no brainier, the only trouble I have with the film was the characters were empty, when you compare to other films such as Indy and Star Wars, those films gives you time for you to care about the characters, with Sky Captain it was just a rush through to the end, the story was predictable but it was a no brainier fun.

Man on Fire: A total disappointment, the one thing that put me off was the MTV flashy editing and the total emphasis on what they were saying in subtitles, it was just like watching an MTV programme, where they spoon feed you the information just incase you have an attention span of two seconds.

An hour and 20 mins was just about Denzel and the little girl driving her to school and back, it might as well of been called Driving Little Miss Daisy.
It only started to get interesting when he starts rampaging after the baddies, which lasted about TWENTY minutes!!!

Not only that you would of thought Denzel would of learnt that if you get shot, next time you would wear a bullet proof vest, because the dumb idiot gets shot at POINT BLANK RANGE again, but instead of dying instantly he spends half an hour negotiating a deal and then driving all the way to the bad guys, and I`m thinking is the f***er SUPERMAN!!!

This has got to be false advertisement in the extreme, when you have QT saying tough as hell, and the adverts making it out to be a high octane action film, it was just a huge disappointment, boring as hell, and the twist is that predictable not only could you see it a mile off, you would only have to look at the front of the DVD cover.

Collateral: This was fantastic!!! I enjoyed Cruise`s performance as a ruthless killer, and Fox was excellent as the cab driver, the dialogue was sharp, this was Mann back on form, real edge on your seat thriller.

Chaos: From the director of Ring, and Dark Water, this is a very strange film, for the fact that if you don`t pay attention you lose the plot completely, not that it makes sense. There is no clear indication of time frame as it jumps forwards and backwards, and the ending isn`t as shocking or gripping as Ring or Dark Water, this film leaves you thinking `oh right`, it is clever, but it is poorly executed.

Memento: I enjoyed this film the second time round, and I have to say that I really really like this movie, fantastic performance from everybody. If you haven`t seen it, go watch it.

PTU: If this was filmed in America or the UK this would be a film about police brutality, but as it`s made in China, where human rights is non existence, then you have to set your moral opinions aside and have to accept this kind of behaviour from the Chinese police. Still a good film though, and would highly recommend PTU.
