DVD Rot has begun!

neojash (Harmless) posted this on Monday, 14th March 2005, 20:00

Hi!

I`ve been collecting DVD`s since their introduction back in 1999. I have amassed over three hundred since then. Recently, I have noticed that at least thirty of my discs have started to delaminate, and that several of the affected platters are now unplayable.

Does anybody out there have any answers as to why this breakdown is happening? Does anybody out there have any affected discs of their own? Does anybody out there know how long it takes before all of the affected discs become nothing more than mere coasters?

Help me. Please...help me.

Neojash

Well, i`m not expert, but i thought DVD "rot" applied only to certain titles.

I know it`s not as widespread as first though (15% of all DVDs), and that often what is put down to rot (delamination, cracking etc) is actually down to poor treatment of the discs by their owners.

But then again, that sounds like the sort of s***e that a Hollywood studio would put in a press release.

Maybe you should disregard my post and wait for someone else!

Apparently some manufacturers will accept that poor adhesives that could cause the layers to split, or possibly inappropriate packaging. However, most put the blame firmly on the user!
Here`s something I cut n` pasted...

"If a customer claims that they have a non-playable disc that "used to work fine", we typically ask many questions. First, what is the condition of the disc in question? Any fingerprints or obvious contamination on the surface? Any scratches (particularly tangential ones)? Has the disc been left in a player with the power on for days or weeks at a time (flatness is important for reliable playback)? How about the environment where the disc is stored? Has it been left out in the open where dust can collect on the playable surface? How about the player? How old is it? How many hours has it been used? Is there a layer of dust all over the player? What is the temperature where the player is operating? And so on. In my experience (since 1980), one of these questions almost always reveals something that helps explain the change in performance."

Hope this helps...Personally I haven`t had many/any duds and my collection goes back to circa 2000. Maybe they`ll all fall over next year! ;)

So much for being able to spread Marmite or Jam all over digital media and still having a playable disc after simply wiping it clean :)

Also worth noting that DVDs have particular exposure vulnerabilities that CD based media don`t, so although you might get away with having your Kylie albums littered about the floor, you won`t get way with it with your DeeVeeDees.

No assumptions about how the OP treats his collection, of course! ;)

There are some issues about DVD quality that are well-documented. A good starting point like Magic_ians said is what titles/regions are affected? Otherwise this will turn into one of those pointless Chicken Little threads. "The sky is falling! The sky is falling!"

What! The sky is falling! and I only just found out we`re all going to be killed on Holiday in the US by a SuperVolcano. This is not turning out to be a good week.
