Why I`ll be getting High Definition...
I got a trailer for King Kong on my PC in full whack, 1080 resolution. Now, I haven`t been able to download them because I`m on dial up, but now I`ve had a chance to inspect a HD video file, and not just a demo at a show or shop... WOW!
It doesn`t seem all that long since I got DVD, and said "how can it possibly get any better?". That has been answered. Here is a screenshot of the King Kong trailer I downloaded on dial up, 640x272 resolution -
Now, HD is so big that it doesn`t fit on my screen without down-sizing it. But doing that doesn`t show off it`s quality so instead I`ve just cropped the screenshots. Remember, these are jpeg images, so some of the clarity has been lost. But I think you`ll find that even compared to a DVD image, this is mighty impressive stuff. These are from a trailer with the resolution of 1920x816 -
Remember, those are just sections of the screen. Seeing that image quality in action is a whole new experience. I really wonder what that would look like on a cinema screen. Obviously it`s not gonna match a 35mm print, but I`m sure it would be sharper.

I`m not too clued up on this sort of thing yet, but I don`t think you need a HD TV. It`s just that you won`t get the full benefit of the extra resolution.

RE: Why I`ll be getting High Definition...
If you want HD you will need a TV with the right resolotion to get HD quality. I have been singing HD`s praises for god knows how long now, and people have posted that you can not tell the differance if they are not side by side. Bollox. The differance is massive.

RE: Why I`ll be getting High Definition...
I`ve seen HD in action.....demonstrated in Lewis` in Liverpool City Centre.....and to tell you the truth Im not that impressed! To me it just looks like a well tuned telly! I`ve seen nothing to suddenly make me go out and spend over a grand for a decent plasma/LCD and re-purchase my DVD collection!
I`ll stick to what I`ve got....... :D
P.S. Can you give me a clue as to which of your pictures are HD? I cant tell any difference!

RE: Why I`ll be getting High Definition...
If people can`t tell the difference between between HD television next to a standard one, then they really need their eyes tested! HD looks awesome - I was a "doubter", but if you see one set up properly, you can`t fail but to notice the difference and be impressed.
I`m hoping to get a new HD Plasma screen later this year. Does anyone know how much the Sky HD box will be - would it replace your existing box, or would you have to buy it seperately?
Also, is HD better on a Plasma screen, or an LCD screen?
I hope these things will become clearer once Sky starts it`s HD broadcasts - it should be an interesting year...

I think that`s harsh. I was in my local comet the other day, and soem of the HD TVs were showing MTV and looked really grainy and awful, some of the HD TVs were showing a "This is HD Isn`t it great" type DVD and it looked great other`s were showing it and looked crap.
Easily anyone could have come out with the opinion that HD isn`t all that it`s cracked up to be.
Now I`ve also been in my local Eurotronics shop where you can see that HD really does look very good indeed, not side by side with a CRT, but the picture quality does look great.
Oops, jsut re-read your post and you do say

Yes, definitely in agreement there.
A bloke at work just got one for his XBox 360 and is v happy with it, says DVDs look much better as well.
I`m very much hoping my CRT TV doesn`t die yet. Part of me would want to buy HD, but since I have nothing to really take advantage of it yes there seems little point in the expense, when you can pick up 28" Sony widescreen CRTs for £250 now!!! But then it seems to be silly to buy a stop gap TV, may as well take the plunge.
The 1 person I know who owns ones, doesn`t regeret it, the only problem he seems to have is that when watch BBC news the National picture is great, but when it goes to local news, it looks a bit crap. So the TV isn`t really at fault, it just shows up the flaws with the source material, which I guess is obvious really!

You have to refill a plasma TV I think every 12 months.
I think I`ll wait for the HD TVs to come down in price, pointless going in to these over priced specialist dealers when they`ll come out cheaper in a few years Dixons or Asda.
Besides it`ll be a geek/chav thing for the first year or two, and then when the prices do come down, then the general public will start to show interest.

Ok, if they were showing MTV it was not HD and no doubt a poor feed. A good CRT will beat plasma/LCD with a normal picture, but we are talking HD on this thread. A good plasma/LCD (you can get bad ones) set up correctly running HD blows CRT away.

You have to refill a plasma TV I think every 12 months. is uninformed bulls***. There is no such thing as refilling a plasma. They are a sealed unit. No gas in or out. Of course your overpriced specialist dealers will also set up your set so you will see a differance between standard def and HD.

I have checked up on various internet websites and they do say that it is an urban myth, despite what the newpapers say.
It will be techno geeks, and highly paid chavs who read FHM who will be buying them for the first two years.
And yes I still think they`re are overpriced specialist dealers out there, but I wasn`t refering to you of course. ;)
