A plot too far?

Pete-MK (Elite Donator) posted this on Monday, 31st July 2006, 20:58

From imdb:

Quote:
Child actress Dakota Fanning is set to shock fans in new movie Hounddog, because she has shot child rape scenes and appears semi-naked. The controversial film written and directed by Deborah Kampmeier is a dark and violent story set in American`s rural south - and the 12-year-old`s mother and agent are convinced her gritty performance is Oscar-worthy. Agent Joy Osbrink tells the New York Daily News, "It`s not just the rape scene - the whole story is challenging Dakota as an actress. And I`ve never been so proud of her in my life. I`ve seen the dailies, and in every scene she gets better and better."

This makes me feel slightly ill. Ok, Dakota`s a good child actor, but her performance in WotW was stilted. Being directed by Speilberg probably didn`t help. Ok, she`s obviously confident enough not to be phased by the role, and hopefully it won`t screw her up - Drew barrymore stylee, but this is bordering on exploitation. The simulated rape scenes could easily be done off camera and the semi-nudity? Pointless and jut.. wrong

I agree.

There`s some places you just don`t go in the name of `art``, or Oscar chasing, whatever.

I know they`re "actors" and it`s all "acting", but I bet the fella playing opposite her went home feeling pretty sick that day, too.

IIRC, Jodie Foster`s sister had to be brought in during the filming of Taxi Driver to film a scene where her character unzips a fly. How things have changed.

That`s nice. Did anyone ask the little girl what she thinks?

Just one word "Lolita"

"Nabokov wrote both in Russian and English. His best-known novel, LOLITA (1955), shocked many people but its humor and literary style were praised by critics. The first version of the story, VOLSHEBNIK (The Enchanter), was written in 1939 in Paris. The Enchanter centered on a middle-aged man, who falls in love with a 12-year-old girl and marries her sick, widowed mother to satisfy his erotic desires. He molests the girl in a Riviera hotel while she`s asleep, she wakens and he runs into the traffic and dies. "

Not judging, just commenting.

I feel sorry for Dakota for having the pushy stagemother she does - comparable decisions were made by Brooke Shields`s mum.

The actor who`ll be playing the rapist will probably never work again.

I think it`s telling that the rape had already been filmed before the film was fully funded. It`s like it`s the main attraction.

I`m sure her welfare *must* have been considered...

Yeah because he`s renowned for getting poor performances from child actors :/
And it`s Spielberg :p

Nice one, makes it sound like - day 1 shoot rape scene, day 2 shut down. They had no idea they were going to run out of funding, they shot in a planned order.
Good to see the spirit of Mary Whitehouse lives on. Lets judge something before we`ve seen it!
And less we forget, what bastion of truth reported it over here? The Daily f***ing Mail!
Do you really think they will put something in a `A drama set in the American South, where a precocious, troubled girl (Fanning) finds a safe haven in the music and movement of Elvis Presley.` that will get the film an R rating? Grow up!

Was just looking at the film on IMDB and noticed that Dakota Fanning might be playing the lead in The Lovely Bones :( which deals with similar subject matter, albeit more grisly.

I really hope this isn`t true... I like Fanning and everything but she`s getting all the best child roles and she really isn`t suited to this one.

Also, is it actually legal to show her semi-naked?

This sounds very, very wrong. I can`t see how making this movie can`t affect young Ms. Fanning in some way. She`s 12 years old, and unless she comes from hillbilly stock, the most sexualised thing to cross her mind should be whether to stick a poster of boyband A or boyband B on her wall.

Her mother and agent are gushing about how good she is, and that her performance is Oscar material, but what caring parent would want to put their daughter through such an experience?

This is only Kampmeier`s second movie, and her first (which I admit I haven`t seen) makes her sound like damaged goods. I`ll assume from her gender that the movie she makes won`t be exploitative, but I`m concerned that the movie may easily become a clarion call for kiddy-fiddlers.

One thing`s for certain. The BBFC will land on this movie with both jackboots, and I think I`d be inclined to back them all the way.

I`m not indulging in a second childhood.
I never finished with the first.

It`s not necessarily going to be obscene to have naked children. IIRC at the beginning of the 90`s version of "The Secret Garden" Mary is semi-naked and being bathed by her nanny and it`s innocent. It`s the context I mainly have concerns about, it it was only "Dakota Fanning is topless in her next movie" I would have thought it was odd, but not really disturbing like this "OMG let`s have her getting raped and killing animals, that`ll get us... er *her* an Oscar!" business.

Hey maybe this is just an elaborate sting operation! :D
