Wes Anderson? Shane Meadows? What do these and others have in common?

dignan (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 20th December 2001, 02:30

Ever heard of these directors? They all have one thing in common, great movie makers!!!
It has come to my attention that many movies are overlooked in the UK and that means all the while Hollywood dish out crap like Tomb Raider, Battleship Earth, Mummy Returns etc etc etc, we miss out on the true greats like the ones I am going to list now.
Lets start with a film that is possibly my fav, BOTTLE ROCKET! Its stars are all talented (including the underrated actor Owen Wilson from Shanghi Noon fame, in his first feature, he also co wrote and produced it with Wes Anderson) Not heard of in the UK, its a great movie, with charater driven plot, excelent script and lovely photography. The comedy is light hearted, the music has become a trademark of all Wes Anderson films ... the follow up was the excelent RUSHMORE, which is a little more well known. AND IT IS A MUST SEE!!! It`s available from Play247 only on R1. It never got a release here ... TRAVESTY!
Here is a brief list of other very underrated movies that I consider my favs

HOUSE (R2) British comedy film set in a Bingo hall in Wales ... YES BINGO! and its not boring, its brilliant! Stars the lovely Kelly McDonald from Trainspotting fame.

A ROOM FOR ROMEO BRASS (R2) Another British film that got hidden away from the public, directed by the Talented Shane Meadows (Twenty-Four Seven). The cast are excelent, especially Paddy Considine star turn leaving you to wonder if you should laugh or cry.

LOVE AND SEX (R2) Starring the excelent Jon Favreau (Swingers fame, another of my top 5 movies) A true romantic comedy that will appeal to both sexes

SOME VOICES (R2) Again starring Kelly McDonald and a great performance from David Morrissey. Its an unconventional love story set in London and is very moving

TUBE TALES (R2) A collection of short stories based on and around the London Underground from first time directors like Ewan McGregor and Jude Law. A must see short directed by Armando Iannucci!

And last but by no means, least

IN THE COMPANY OF MEN (R1) Directed by Neil Labute and starring the underrated Aaron Eckhart (Erin Brockovich) This movie is so hard to watch, its a cringe fest. But very funny! About what lengths a guy will goto to get his own back on the opposite sex!

So there you have it, some movies that you may not have heard of ... if so, SEE `EM! If you are feeling a bit low after this years offering from the flicks, see these and they will tell you that there are still great movies around, honest!

TELL US YOUR PICKS? MOVIES OTHERS MIGHT NOT BE AWARE OF.

Cheers

PS If I can get one person to say they have baught Bottle Rocket! My job here has been done!!!

Yeah, I have to agree that BottleRocket is one of those hidden gems. I`m looking forward to the Royal Tenenbaums - it`s been getting some great reviews. "Hey Dignan, why do have a plaster on your nose?". "Exactly...."

One of my all-time favourite movies is Fandango - it`s one of Costner`s first, and in my opinion best, films though unfortunately it`s almost impossible to track down on video let alone dvd.

Shaolin Soccer (which I only saw last night) is one of the most entertaining movies you are likely to see this year - check it out.

Peter "Lord of the Rings" Jackson`s first few films are always worth a watch - Bad Taste, Meet The Feebles and Braindead are now considered classics.

I do like Peter Jackson, Bad Taste is a classic of that genre ... But I love Heavenly Creatures ... great movie!

You probably already know but you can get hold of the Fandago quite easily in the US, I must admit to liking it myself when I saw it on cable out there. Anyway here are the links

Amazon.com stock the movie Fandango but its on NTSC (Both VHS)

Or Ebay you can get it cheaper but again NTSC only http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1497966801
