I had a bit of a horror week, I decided to watch the films that I`ve never seen before and they were gathring dust on my shelf, so I decided to put Halloween back on the shelf and finally watch my unseen horror DVDs.

So here`s what I watched last week.

Dead and Buried
A curious horror film from the early 80s, which apparently went through so many changes during the filming, that the original dark comedy that it was meant to be, was lost due to interference from three different financers.

It`s a good a film, even though the storyline is a bit all over the place, and predictable, but it does have great Stan Winston effects, including one cringe worthy moment set in the hospital.

Maniac
A very grubby low budget movie, that caused a lot of controversy when it was first released. Joe Spinell, plays a serial killer who hears voices, murders prostitutes, (mainly played by porno actresses), and places their scalps on his mannequins' heads.

It`s an okay movie but two year`s later, Fulci did one better called, New York Ripper, but it`s got a great murder sequence thanks to Savini, which involves the victim`s head (played by Savini himself) exploding by a shot gun.

Hostel
An okay film, it`s only purpose is to make the audience cringe and yak at the gory torture, but other than that pretty forgetable

Hostel 2
Much of the same, but this time it`s the womens turn to get tortured. I got bored half way through, and became annoyed at how predictable the film was becoming. There`s no denying that Roth is a talented director, but you`d be better off renting/buying a proper 70s slasher flick, or a gory Japanese film.

Cat People
Weird, and strange, S&M remake of the original Lewton classic, which bears no resemblace the 1942 version, but the film`s highlight is Malcolm McDowell camping it up as always.

I was expecting this to be good, considering the director Schrader wrote Taxi Driver, and Raging Bull, but it was okay, but it relied more on sex, rather than horror.

Hard Candy
I really enjoyed this film, you`d be thinking that this was a horror movie judging by the cover, but this is a very tight thriller, quite disturbing as well, and even though there`s a few niggly faults, on a whole this was excellent.

[Rec]
Out of all the first person camcorder movies out there, this p***es all over them. A taut horror film which has plenty of jump scenes, some you know are going to be there but others you don`t, it`s a proper edge of your seat horror movie.

RE: What films did you watch over Halloween?

I watched 30 Days of Night and, of course, Halloween. The rest of my week`s viewing was varied and can be found at MyReviewer or my subsite.

I watched [rec] a few weeks ago and it is a stunningly effective horror movie - Quarantine has a lot to live up to.

Which I`d guess it won`t lol. I also can`t believe that:

SPOILER:
the quarantine trailer shows the last shot of the movie, that has to be a REALLY stupid decision (unless they`ve changed the ending of course but I can`t see how they could have)

Agreed though, it is awesome.

The [Rec] trailer did that too.

Yeah I saw that end shot too. Guess it would only make sense though, if you`d seen the film.

Oh, and I watched The Changeling and Return of the Living Dead.

I watched:

House Of 1000 Corpses
The Devil`s Rejects
Both quite gory and nasty. Ok if you like that sort of thing though...

Hannibal Rising
Much better than I thought it would be - especially for a prequel. And Rhys Ifans was superb.

The Messengers
Ok haunted house type horror, but a bit of an Amytiville Horror rip-off.

The Wicker Man Director`s Cut
Not as bad as everyone says (or as it could have been), but had none of the religious overtones and all-out creepiness of the original.

Saw IV
Ok for the gore, but it`s wearing very thin now...

I`ve still got Day Of, Land Of, and Diary Of The Dead to watch on Blu-Ray which should be fun!

Did you get round to watching the new "Halloween", Floyd?

The Changeling is a very good ghost story, George C Scott, was also excellent in Exorcist III. Return of the Living Dead is a cult classic.

I`ve got House Of 1000 Corpses,The Devil`s Rejects, but haven`t got round to seeing it yet, nor the remake of Halloween.

In all honesty they should have stopped at Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal, and Hannibal Rising are very poor compared to the Manhunter and Lambs.

The Wicker Man Director`s Cut Remake or original? If it`s the remake, I`ve never seen it, and never will.

Saw IV I`ve seen few some clips from one of the films, when it was on Channel Four, and I much prefer my horror to have no MTV style editing.

I thought this was a great film. Definitely more thriller than horror but quite scary if you are a man...

I miss the honky tonks, the Dairy Queens and Seven Elevens...

Devils Rejects - most excellent

Feast II Sloppy Seconds - funny (not porn)

Prom Night - typical slasher movies

The Ruins - quite good

All the boys Love Mandy Lane - average with a twist at the end

I have to disagree there... While (obviously) not as good as "Silence...", I really enjoyed the other Hannibal films: "Hannibal" was good, gory fun (and quite underrated), "Red Dragon" was an excellent remake (although I was never that keen on the original/Manhunter), and "Hannibal Rising" - as a prequel, and the dreaded "fourth in the franchise" film was a lot better than it should have been really.

The remake I`m afraid. And I can`t really blame you - my curiosity got the better of me though... ;)
