X Box Surround Sound Options - Help!

Neil Martin (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 22nd January 2003, 14:42

I am thinking of buying a home cinema type system to get a bit more out of the 5.1 Dolby effects on the X Box. I want to spend less than £150, the cheaper the better.

Do I need to buy a separate amp, or will th espeakers suffice?

I am using a Wharfie 750s, so is it worth my while buying an amp anyway?

Can anyone recommend a good package? The Sony HTBE1 looks good, but at £209 it is a bit beyond my budget. Any comments in particular on the Acoustic Solutions DS535 Home Cinema System? Only £100 in Argos.

Many Thanks.

I use the yamaha TSS-1 surround system, it has DD 5.1, DTS and pro logic, I bought mine for £160 I think it is around £80 now @ pcworld. I am very happy with this but I wouldn`t advise it for a very large room only medium to small.

might be wrong (please correct me) dont you have to use the advanced scart cable using the Fibre Optic to get Digital output? or will standard AV leads do it?

Nope you are correct there, you need the advanced scart lead or the hi-def pack to get the optical out. Worth getting the Hi-Def pack anyway as it comes with pretty much every connection under the sun anyway!
