Does Anyone Remember the Release Prices of Consoles?

andy.c (Competent) posted this on Friday, 18th February 2005, 22:38

With the PSP and DS coming out soon and the usual 'are the release prices to dear', does anyone remember the release price of old consoles and how they dropped in price?

For example, N64, Playsation, SNES, NES, Mega Drive, Master system, Original Gameboy.

I for one cant remember as I anit that old, but I think it would be interesting to see what they where.

Yeah - I remember a mate of mine getting a Playstation for £300 (I think) when it first came out :o Safe to say, it soon fell and he was sick as a parrot. Its always the same though they exploit the fanboys who have to have it, then reduce the price to get the casual gamers.

Never bought one, but seem to remember the original PlayStation had an RRP of £329, and then when the Saturn was launched shortly after, both dropped to £299.

Gamecube was supposed to be £169 at launch, but was cut to £129 because xbox dropped there price to £179 about 3 weeks before the GCs launch.

My Boyfriend when I was 14 bought me a NES for Christmas and I think it was around £120 even though it had been out a few years ,(come to think of it its still going strong and the kids have took it to their nans to play with when they stay there :D ),I defo think the relative price of consoles/games has improved a lot .

Like the other poor chap I got ripped off by Nintendo with the N64, and paid £250 at launch. The SNES was an altogether better deal, I paid £149 at launch and it came with 2 pads, Super Mario World, and an AV Scart lead.

The Megadrive was £189 at launch with Altered Beast (I think someone`s already said that haven`t they?), and the Saturn was a totally unrealistic £399.

The moral? Never buy consoles at launch! :D

Hmmm, these are rough prices, but they`re not far off.

I think I paid about £250-£300 for an imported Jap Megadrive. I then got the fabulous Strider and a couple of others to go with it. Strider is still my favourite arcade conversion of all time!

I paid just over £300 for a Jap Super Famicom. I stumped up yet more cash at the same time for Super Mario 4, F-Zero, Pilot Wings and Final Fight. I then went on to spend more than £200 on Street Fighter II carts over the years (Street Fighter II, Street Fighter II Turbo, Super Street Fighter II). This remains the best console I ever had, mostly because of games like Act Raiser and the Mortal Kombat series (even if they were hard to play in Japanese).

My Playstation was £300, plus the money for Ridge Racer and Battle Arena Toshinden. I never really got on that well with the PS, and I sold it a while later with only a handful of games.

I then bought a Saturn to play the Capcom beat-em-ups that the PS couldn`t handle at the time (X-Men etc). I still have the Saturn, but only a few games like Virtua Cop 2 and X-Men...

My Nintendo 64 was £250 on opening day, and yes I was p***ed off when they slashed the price a few weeks later. Still, it was worth it for Mario 64 - that and Zelda are two of the best games I`ve ever played. Goldeneye ruled as well.

Then I bought a Dreamcast. I got one in Toys R Us when they announced its death, so it was very cheap (just over £100 with a software bundle). Got a load of games with it, mostly crap, but I traded them in for some good ones. Plus back then DC games were freely available on the web... It`s a pity the DC didn`t do better.

Last thing I bought was the Gamecube, and I paid £120 for it with one game (Rogue Squadron). I really liked Mario Sunshine, Zelda, Rogue Leader and Bounty Hunter, but I don`t really buy much for it. I`ve kind of grown out of console now because of the price of the games.

Oh, and I almost forgot, I was the person who bought the Atari Jaguar (cost me £250). I got it for Alien vs. Predator, and it`s still out in the shed. It`ll be completely ruined now though because the shed leaks. A fitting end for a such a wet console...
