Does anyone know the returns policy for games at Tesco?

penzance (Competent) posted this on Saturday, 26th March 2005, 22:57

In other words can I return a game if I don`t like it or does it still have to have the wrapping?

Thanks

Thanks, I knew this would happen, Game seems to be the only place left that allows returns on opened games, oh and Asda.

When I worked at Tesco years back there were posters all over the staff room etc saying `The Customer is always right`. They made a very big deal over it. Take it back and see what they say, nothing to lose.

Tell `em it`s bloody faulty! They`ll have to change it then. And don`t let them give you any crap about testing it. I had that happen to me a while ago and I just said to the guy; "Great, I`m thrilled it works on your machine, but it don`t on mine!". An item has to be fit for the purpose for which it was bought. If it works on a shop machine, but won`t work on your system, it`s money back time! Let me know how you get on....

But surely if the game works on a shop machine but "doesn`t" on yours, then logic dictates it`s your machine at fault.

Which by my understanding, should give any store the right to wag their finger in your face and go "Na na na-na na!".

People should be more careful when buying games. Or if you can`t resist buying the newest crapfest, at least buy it from GAME, where you know you`ll get your dolla` back.

Well, that`s a fair point, but it`s one I`ve been known to argue to my advantage. If my machine plays everything else but not this then surely there`s something wrong with the game? If I`m not happy I`ll argue `til the cows come home! That said, it`s definitely good advice to try before you buy if possible, and not rush out to buy the latest over-hyped rubbish, and be more careful with their £40. The only time I had to return something in this fashion was MSR for the DC, which was very actually faulty. It only loaded intermittently, even though all other games worked fine. I stood for hours in Toys `R Us explaining the fault and had to wait while the assistant tried to make me feel like a criminal, and tested it on their machine. Eventually, because I`m VERY outspoken they had to change it. And guess what? The new copy worked perfectly.

What was the game you were intending to return?

I bought Brothers in Arms for the Xbox, however after playing it more and after really understanding the whole concept of the game I actually like it quite a bit now. I spent hours on it last night after hearing Tescos wouldn`t take it back and it is actually a pretty good game now that I have mastered it. I guess I was lucky this time, but it still annoyes me that you can`t buy a game with confidence anymore unless you buy it from Game or Asda. This is the main reason I like Game online, because its cheaper than Game on the high street and you have the extra bonus of taking it back if you dislike it.

I understand that some people may abuse the possibility of returns, but if you restrict to only one exchange where is the harm in that. Virgin are the worst in my opinion. They wouldn`t give me my money back after I had bought dvd`s only 2 hours beforehand that were still unopened. That was the last time I ever shopped there and will never shop there again. I hate money grabbing Bstrds! I also hate the fact that I am an impulsive spender, argh!!

tbh taking a game back because you don`t like it is abusing the system (i just know i`m gonna get flamed into the middle of next week for saying that :) ) think of it from the other point of view, if you go into tesco & pick a game up, then when you get home you realize the games been used, how p***ed of would you be ? if you buy a crap game (& i`ve spent hundreds maybe thousands over the years on stuff i`ve hated once i`ve played it ) it`s the peeps that made the game that are responsible, not the retailer & imo, magazine reviews are generally useless, the only way to be sure is to rent it first, blockbuster used to knock the rental price of the game if you bought it after renting (dunno if they still do tho)

the last game i bought without testing first was HALO 2 & i ended up hating it & selling it on, (halo 1 is still my all time fave, followed by goldeneye n64)

Most definitely. But if a game genuinely has a software fault, it won`t work on the instore hardware, either. Unless it`s been retrofitted with a malignant virus code specifically targeted to destroy your machine. I hear GAME do that after one return too many...

I`ve never been a fan of returning games on the basis of them being crap. As Chris says, some poor soul is going to end up paying for a new game, and coming home with your returned copy. I`ve also spend squillions on rubbish games. You live, you learn. So now i wait til they`re cheaper than a filipino love bride, so if it`s crap, i`m not too bothered.
