Setting up Wii

handsome.b.wonderful (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 4th January 2007, 16:46

I`m planning on getting a Wii when the next batch arrives (end of January?) but I wanted to know what setup people are using for it. Is it true that only a composite cable is supplied with the console? I`ve heard a lot about the (lack of) component cables available but is there an RGB Scart lead out there for us cavemen still using CRTs?

As always any help/advice would be appreciated.

There is an RGB cable, but I haven`t managed to see one in a shop yet. Even the component cables are tough to find.

If you`re on the lookout for one, check UK Wii Consoles - they are checking the usual suspects so you don`t have to keep going from site to site yourself.
Looks like Woolies had some this morning, but they`d all gone by the time I was able to check this afternoon. Mind you, mine should be coming from Game anyday now - they`ve repeatedly promised `first two weeks in January` when my wife has rung to ask about the order she placed.

Well, it`s not really like that. Scart is just the connector; RGB is the signal standard. Scarts can carry both composite and RGB signals. But when it comes to gaming, unless the lead is specified as RGB scart, it`s normally just wired for composite.

And composite is better than Scart I take it?

No, well, scart can be composite. Composite is the lead it comes with - the picture is carried through the yellow connector. This is the worst type of connection for picture.
Connecting up with an RGB scart (usually the official one - if you can get hold of one..) will give a huge gain in picture quality. Component should be better again - 3 separate cables for colour and two for sound.

We will pay the price but we will not count the cost..

So there is an official RGB Scart cable out there (somewhere)?

Yes.Finding pictures of them is easier than finding somewhere with stock though....

Well component is out of the question as I have my Xbox 360 in through that, so if I was to `upgrade` it would be RGB I guess. I can live with the picture as it though at the moment, in all honesty.
