PS3 profile/ saved games

1mills (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 28th October 2009, 15:55

Are saved games transferable between two PS3`s, say if I wanted to use a shared PS3 with my younger brother in the weeks, but then to take back to mine for the weekends.

Would probably just be chucking them on a external hard drive. No major hardship if I needed two separate online log ins for each PS3, seen as you don`t pay online.

Assume I would only lose the trophies and my gamer ranking for games?

Wondering as reckon my bro will be willing to go halves so we`ve got a PS3 each, rather than a shared one at the moment (that I paid fully for anyway :o , but it`s long story).

You should be able to backup game saves to a memory stick/hard drive.
Then copy them back to another PS3.
I can`t access any game related sites from work, so can`t Google to check it out, but I`m fairly sure that works.

Sign in with the same PSN account on both machines.
Trophies are all stored online and sync`d down when you log in to your account. So you don`t lose anything for those.

Cheers Miles, I`ll double check the game saves (just thought, a 4gb keyring dongle may be more convenient option).

Wasn`t being completely lazy when asking that question, as I thought it`s best to put the whole question somewhere like here, so people can point out a massive flaw in my plan, that may not be shown if I just google moving saved games.

I`ll tell my brother the possible bad news (for him) tonight :D

A quick google seems to indicate the only issue on transferring saves games from one PS3 to another is that it disables trophies on that game. Fair enough.

Potentially may not even effect me if I`m loading it to the same PS3 profile.

mills, you may be in for a nasty shock.

i had to buy a 16GB USB drive to transfer 3 profiles from my knackered
PS3 to the new one.

i`m not entirely convinced a 4GB stick will be enough!!

plus... not all gamesaves work when transfered... my son`s progress through
ghostbusters was lost completely and consequent downloaded (from game mags)
save files have failed to put this right.

Will the profiles not be more space than a saved game though? It`s only the saved games I thought I`d need to transfer as everything else downloads to the same profile being used on both PS3`s?

I`m guessing the maximum I would have would be 3 saved games at a time.

The one good thing, if I do go all out is that I won`t "lose" saved games, just won`t be able to use it on both PS3`s.

You can sync the trophies first - they`re not stored on the PS3.
For the game saves, you can back them up individually - not the profile.
HOWEVER!!!!,, there are some games where you can`t back up your save game individually - think Guitar Hero (5?) is at least one BUT you can do it if you do a full system backup. But that`s generally only done if you`re upgrading the HDD and then want to do a restore to the new HDD (maybe that`s what splintercell is referring to?). No way should save games be anything close to GB`s..... That probably included game data (installs etc...) which can be lots of GB`s....
Some may be a few MB`s but most are generally in the KB`s.....
To back up the game saves just go to the game menu and up to the Save Data Utility. Select the game and hit the triangle. Select `Copy` and you`re done. (Obviously after selecting the USB/HDD drive you have plugged in).... It`s a pain that you can`t back up more files in bulk... Individually or the whole system. :(
I upgraded my HDD from 80GB to 500GB. Full backup and it was all fine. Except the PS3 assigns about 10% to the `system` so on a 500GB`er you`re `only` left with about 413GB. :o So, after the 465 or so of `real` GB`s, over 50GB was taken by the system never to be seen again......................... :/ Still, all my music, photos and loads of films and a good few 100GB left... :)
Oh yeah, so, although a pain in the arse, you can copy each time (on most games..) to a USB stick and take it to another PS3 and copy/load it. And vice versa etc.

My music, photos & movies are on an external 1TB drive (913GB formatted capacity)....I have 105GB left on it now!! :D

Ste`s right about the game saves. Most of them are no bigger than 3.5MB (some are tiny < 250KB).
