Total Film v Empire

I subscribe to TF, and have done since April 2000. It is great - in-depth features, reliable reviews, good news service and an average DVD section.

However, Empire popped through my letterbox this morning for no apparent reason (a mixup at the newsagent I think) and after reading most of it, I`m very impressed.

Should I change my subscription, or stay the same? Or of course, keep the current subscription and buy the odd issue of Empire?

Just got this month`s Empire.

Bit annoyed that there are FOUR free screenings and not one for Hull - bah!

I get both. I find that after a few years of reading each, they really aren`t so split on their opinion. I prefer Empire, but I still like Total Film enough to keep subscribing.

Both have gone down-hill over the last couple of years. Total Film has followed Empire in the style of the way the magazine looks and feels and I found myself getting annoyed by the way that often unless films are low-budget indie projects they always seem to be under-rated.

I`ve stopped buying them both regularly anyway because you can find all the same news and more up to date stuff on the net.

They`ve both become rather similar in the sense that their approach has garnered layers of pretension over the years. Reviewing is definitely not in a good way when formerly unambiguous rags don`t seem to know what they`re looking at anymore. I haven`t read either in a few months, although the last time I checked, `Total Film` was the moderately less conceited.

I picked up Total Film recently on the recommendations of folk on this here site, though it was ok but not as good as Hotdog. I lost faith in Empire years ago.
