What are you guys actually thinking?

Blazingmonga (Elite) posted this on Sunday, 14th January 2001, 23:21

It just occured to me that alot of people that buy DVDs are not really buying them for the films at all and are just getting them for the extras and because DVDs are shiny. I think there alot of people hypnotised by the opportunity to own another big black box with another remote. Folk out there are buying them in the bucketload and for what? Dont people build up a nice neat film collection anymore? What is the world coming to?

Feel free to ignore that and just answer this question:

What made you, the viewer, want to buy a DVD player and DVDs?

Aye.

How did it occur to you just out of interest? I for one only buy DVDs of films that I really enjoy and will want to watch over and over again (not all that many then!) Sure some people might like collecting DVD`s and want to build up a big collection that`s up to them and there`s nothing wrong with that if thats what they want.

>What made you, the viewer, want to buy a DVD player and DVDs?

Simple:

1. quality of picture and sound.
2. ease of navigation to the different scenes of a film.
3. extras that are included with the films.
4. nice and compact.
5. no rewinding when finished ;-)

VHS can now kiss my ass!

It occured to me because everyone is always bitching about how some DVDs dont have any extras. I mean sure extras are good, but they arent everything. I think people are just dissapointed that they dont get enough buttons to press.

I bought a DVD player because I am very into films and was about to start building up a definative film collection. I figured that it would be sensible to start with DVDs rather than tapes (I spit on tapes) and they interested me. I did buy my player for the films though. Honest.

I am never going to watch a tape again, infact I havent watched a single tape since I got my player (4 odd months ago).

A number of factors for me.

Good picture and sound.

To be able to go directly to a scene and play it. I like to watch individual scenes from movies. In fact I just spent most of this afternoon playing all my favourite scenes :-) I wouldn`t even contemplate doing that with VHS

And a format that wouldn`t degrade if I played it a lot. Videotape - yughh!!

Cheers,
Malcolm

Wow things just keep occuring to you dont they! ;-)
Sure the most important thing is the actual film but I think the extras are important too. They can give you an insight into how the film was made, interviews with the actors and info about them and other films they have done if you want to check them out, and also director commentry on the film. To me these are all valuable things that can further extend your enjoyment of the film as a whole. I`d say extras are better than good they`re excellent! And those companies/studios that dont add extras to their DVD releases are just plain lazy in my book.

Oh yeah just remembered another reason:

6. Sub titles and dubbing options for different languages! - This is an excellent feature that DVD makes possible, especially for a Hong Kong/Kung fu film fan such as me!

I think with me it`s the fantastic sound. I just lurve loud noise. I had a good old Harman-Kardon pro-logic amp before my current amp and just loved cranking movies up a notch or two. DVD offers me excellent multi-channel sound, and encouraged me to upgrade my budget home cinema set up oo.

DVD just seems to offer a lot more than cranky old VHS, a format that is now 20 years old. Easy access to my favourite scenes in my favourite films is an obvious plus point.

And, more importantly, being the only person in my office to own a player and thus being able to show off the benefits of DVD, and to act all smug and self-indulgent when my colleagues say they watched The Matrix on video (stock answer : "Weeeeelll - you should see it on DVD, you know : sounds fantastic) and watching the envy in their faces !!!

Well, people who bought movies on video have always seemed to hate films, despite their pining to the contrary. This, I admit, seems to have increased with the advent of DVD where we now seem to have nothing but people who hate movies buying them. DVD does make connoisseurs out of the people who watch them, so that probably has something to do with it.

It also occured to me that people ask for alot when they buy DVDs. Extras are good and all, but it is kind of impossible for every disc to have them. It just confuses me how people never complained that all videos didnt have documentaries on the end of them, after all they could have.

I am pleased anough if a DVD has decent video and sound. I am more pleased when there are extras, but I wont cry if there are none. Not for long at least.

Totally agree Blazin`, to me the film and the sound is the key factor. Anything else is just a real bonus.

What do people think about people like Warner`s releasing old films and charging £12.99, without the extras. I`d personally prefer to see more of the same from other studios. Extras at the end of the day are fairly superfluous (altho` there are exceptions - the documentary in The Exorcist is pretty interesting)

....usually thinking about porn actually!

Man you better take it easy Blazingmango, you`re brain`s going into overload with all this thinking, take a seat dude, and stop scratching that head, you`re hair will fall out (well whatever`s left!).

>It also occured to me that people ask for alot when they buy DVDs.

Damn right if I`m going to pay twice what I would have if I bought the film on VHS.

>Extras are good and all, but it is kind of impossible for every disc to have them.

Why the hell is it impossible? There is ALWAYS extra`s that can be added to a film, always. Whether they are added or not is another matter.

Basically I think it boils down to this. Almost every film I know that is on DVD has extras included. What this means is that people now expect films on DVD to come with extras. Those that don`t will seem poor in comparison to the majority.

Good night.
