Just came back from NY last week....experienced 2 hotels
Shearaton New York and Towers- not bad
approx 5 min walk to Times sq/ 10 min to 5th Ave/ 15 min to Cen. Park.

Hilton New York- a bit better
2 min walk from Shearaton.

If you can afford it the Waldorf Astoria is great or the Pennisula.
If you want to impress a girlfriend, then its got to be "The Kitano".
When I go next year, I`m going to try the "Swissotel", my friends just come from there
and been raving about it.
To be in the thick of the action during New Year, try the Marriott, its in Times Sq.

Things I recommend while in New York :-
Empire State Building observation floor (if clear day)
Metropolitan Museum
American Natural History Museum (Forget the Rose Space Museum next to it)
South Sea port
United Nations
Circle line cruise around Manhatten (2 hr cruise is best, 3 hr too long, 1 hr no point)
Central Park
5th Ave for (window)shopping- checkout Tiffanys, Trump Tower
Bronx Zoo
Rockefellar Centre
AND the great resturants...its better not to eat in the hotel to get true flavour of NYC

We also tried the Intrepid Sea-Air Museum -- Forget it !!

That`s all I can thick of at the moment,
Guppy

Good list above :D Absolutley do the cruise. We did the 3 hour and thought it was great. As is the Empire State Building - get there early in the morning to avoid the queues or go just before it closes to see NY at night. Times Square is also somewhere not to miss - especially after dark - it`s spectacular.

It will be VERY cold in NY at that time of year! We went in December and our first purchases were woolley hats and scarfs :D

I would imagine that the outdoor ice rink at Rockafella Plaza is still there after Xmas too - it`s been in so many movies it`s a must see! If you like movie stuff (these are the DVD reviewer forums after all) then Grand Central Station and the New York Public Library are worth looking at.

We stayed at the Hotel Metro - not one of your posh well known ones - but it was excellent value for money and ideally placed about 500 yards from Maceys (the world` largest department store) and the Empire State building. They also have complimentery coffee on all day so after a morning wandering around it was great to drop off the shopping in our room, help ourselves to coffee and watch TV for a bit before heading out again! There`s also an excellent Pizza place down the street - really authentic NY Italian. Their webby is here It`s on 35th Street and nearly all of the main attractions are within easy walking distance. We even walked up to Central park from there and had a coach ride in the snow :)

Somewhere silly to eat is Mars 2112. A restaurant themed like a base on Mars! The food is similar to hard Rock cafe etc - burgers etc. But they ask you if you`d like to fly or walk to Mars when you arrive :) It`s also near Times Square.

We stayed at the Rooseveldt (as featured in the French Connection) in a great location (Maddison Av/5th Av) with Grand Central as your nearest subway stop and the Chrysler Building round the corner (the best building in NY, probably). Nearby is Rockerfella Plaza which is very Christmassy what with the Ice Rink an`all (there`s also an ice rink at the bottom end of Central Park). If the weather`s ok it`s just good to wonder round (Greenwich, Soho, Little Italy etc). And take the subway across to Brooklyn then walk back over Brooklyn Bridge. Also go over to the Satue of Liberty and go up the World Tra... ooops!

nope - times square is bad enough at the best of times, let alone packed with thousands of people.

Neil,

You know your wife...but I would give her a little more warning. I`d kill `im indoors if he did that to me. I`d love the trip, but what about getting my hair done, clothes etc.

Make sure if you`re springing it on her that you factor that stuff in and `treat` her beforehand to a new hairdo etc.

But maybe I`m just jealous :D
