Big problems with ebay...........any advice greatly received!

Roger James (Elite) posted this on Monday, 5th January 2004, 22:08

Been buying loads of guitar gear from both Japan and the US of A as well as the UK, all has been well as I pay via Paypal, however I bid and won 10 (yes ten) guitar bodies from the States thinking it was secure as the guy had the Paypal Logo on each auction page. However after bidding and winning 10 of the items the confirmation e-mail I received from the guy states that he wants an International Money Order for the whole amount. I reply that I will pay via Paypal and he replies to say that he cannot accept any payment Internationally via Paypal and only $200 in the States. I have contacted ebay and they are investigating, but this guy is threatening to `blacklist` me even tho` I am prepared to pay via Paypal............................Anyone ever had a similar situation. How did you get on, and were ebay sympathetic to any complaints like this! Sorry it`s a bit long-winded but this t**t has got my goat, big time!! Roger.

Yes Chuck I think i`m right, and I hope ebay backs me on this, as I said i`ve actually won these items and want them, but on the terms offered, but then you never know which way it`s going to go. Roger.

He might have listed his items not knowing that the Paypal logo had been added.... and knowing how much Paypal ( now owned by eBay ! ) take as commission he might not want paying via that method and lose quite a bit of cash in the process.

I think you are being harsh by reporting to eBay right away, although you don`t say if you have tried to resolve the matter with the seller 1st.

If he doesn`t have a high rating I`d be inclined to him the benefit of the doubt and be aware that eBay are pathetic at sorting problems out, they don`t even remove pirate items even when reported.

All they are interested in is PROFIT. ( OK eBay rant over ).

I`m sure the seller ( or is it t**t ? ) is quite within his rights to ask for a money order and NOT Paypal after all its up to him how he wants paid, although I appreciate he has the Paypal logo on the listings.

Remember that if it is a Paypal Personal Account that he has, he can`t accept payments from a credit card via Paypal.

It`s all too easy to get really wound up over deals on eBay especially when dealing via email as messages and requests can be misinterpreted very easily and buyers and sellers can fall out at the drop of a hat.

Does it cost any extra to sort out a money order, it probably does I suppose, but if you are getting a good deal on the guitars then it might just be worth paying that little bit extra to get the deal done?

Its worth noting as well that if it`s a lot of money and the payment from you bounces its the seller that is liable for the returned payment costs to Paypal and not the person paying.

Or the Seller might just be a complete T * * T !!

:)

mikey, if he had stated on the auction pages that he didn`t accept Paypal (it was listed as his PREFERRED method of payment!) then, on the grounds of safe International trading I wouldn`t have bid. By the way, you have to take into account that this transaction would probably run into in excess of $800, hardly a small amount to send swanning off to another country half way around the world, to someone i`ve never met before! This guy is supposedly running a business, but even in the States his Paypal limit is apparently only $200 (about £120)! I`ve recently imported a couple of guitars from Japan and the transaction was textbook and smooth as silk, and these came to a similar amount as the TEN items I have agreed on with this guy! It can take months before I go into any sort of profit with these items, and the last thing I needed was this kind of crap from someone who is obviously running a business without the proper facilities!
As a further point ot interest, ebay have replied and appear to be washing their hands of the matter (as one of the previous posters intimated they would). I have replied, but don`t expect much joy out of them. If this `pudding` insists on listing me as a non-paying bidder then I will have to respond likewise and list him as a non-selling seller!! It`s a lesson harshly learned. Roger.

I would say the bottom line is if he said he accepted paypal and then refuses to take it, you are right to insist he takes paypal.

Also with regard to ebay complaints procedures, they always send a standard email when you complain the first time. But it should also state in this what to do if you have no joy using the suggestions they make.

The only real problem is he is US based, as if he was in the UK you could use our wonderful legal system to annoy him with.

With you on this one - if PayPal is listed as preferred then you are well within your rights to pay with it.

However, the seller does have the right to change the conditions whenever he chooses, which of course means that the conditions are different to when you made your bid, meaning you can opt out and cancel your bids.

It takes a few months to get your PayPal account balance limit lifted I think, so it`s not going to be any time soon that you can pay him by PayPal.

Why not explore the idea of Escrow payment with the seller? Might be a reasonable compromise

the other option is to pay in several seperate payments, maybe agree to split any extra paypal charges 50/50. That way you can pay under his limit - remember that paypal does allow you to make payments outside of planet ebay! If i remember correctly, you can also make the payment in dollars, rather than in sterling. Have a look at the paupal website and see what it says. It would be better to just get it sorted and then write it off as a bad experience >:(
