Credit card fraud

guppy (Competent) posted this on Tuesday, 20th January 2004, 19:52

Just opened my monthly credit card statement.
Some swine`s done a credit cheque £5,000 balance transfer on my account.

I`ve phoned the company quicksmart, they are looking into it and will let me know
within 1 week. I surely can`t be liable can I.

Anyone else been done like this or been frauded by other means.
Any help or advice is very welcome.

We had a spate recently at our local Asda store of card numbers being duplicated at the Nat West ATM machine. A work colleague was screwed for £2000, but was able to prove he was at work when the money was debited. He was credited the whole amount.

On another note, we accepted a stolen card number at work for a £1500 sale, to which the (un)lucky owner of the card was given a full refund, whilst we were stuck with a charge back.

Oh cr*p. :(
I have a no fraud liability thing on my card, if it`s used over the net and it`s not me, dunno how that works. Never used in a ATM...
Friend of mine used her card online, to buy a book, since then every month a sum has been debited from her card. She can`t stop it, the credit card agency need to know who it is, but she doesn`t know! I think that`s bad. Worried me though!
I hope it all works out for you.

Card numbers being copied whilst you use the ATM.
The bank should stump up for that one, at least in my wifes colleagues case they did as they were that embarrassed that someone had successfully screwed with their machine.

Much less high tech though.
BUY A SHREDDER.
W H Smiths have one for 15 quid

Local scumbags in this town pay the homeless to go through binbags for credit card, bank statements etc.

Wow... so my paranoia about ripping my statements up into the smallest possible pieces, that pee my mum off so much, isn`t me being silly?
I`ve once had a mobile top up used, bought it, opened it, stood outside the store putting in phone... someone behind obviously got numbers in quicker than me. >:( Don`t do that any more.
If I use my cash card in ATMs, I never go alone, always go with my parents, one stands either side behind me.
In Sweden, or at least the two I used in Malmo, and Halmstad central, have like a cage around the keypad, so you can`t see if if looking at if from the side.

Yes, and aparently all the people that aren`t trying to steal your money/card details/identity are terrorists, paedophiles and/or illegal immigrants. :o

You appear to think I`m paranoid UC

In various local areas at differing times specific warnings about precisely this activity are issued by local community officers.

Just because your paranoid doesn`t mean the ba****ds aren`t out to get you. ;)

Or if you want to prove you`re more paranoid than the rest, get a cross-cut shredder. I`m sure there are some out there that love the jigsaw puzzle of a standard strip shredder...

I have a cross-cut one, btw. :D
