Robocop question!

Deano! (Elite) posted this on Friday, 30th March 2001, 19:55

I was considering getting the Criterion version of Robocop (If I can find it anywhere?!).

Thing is, I heard that its going to be re-released later on this year, with Dolby 5.1 / Anamorphic WS. But it will be cut. Is this true?

The Criterion version, (I think) is in Letterbox / Dolby 2.0. BUT it`s uncut.

Which should I get? More to the point how badly will the re-release be cut? Will I notice the cuts? And if the Criterion is the best where can I get it from!?

Cheers!

I got my copy from http://www.dvdboxoffice.com or, you could try,

http://www.dvdplanet.com but you will receive an e-mail that says;

"Thank you for your order. Our standard policy for first-time orders is to
contact the issuing bank to verify the billing information on the credit
card account. Unfortunately, they are unable to verify the information with
us. Therefore, we will need for you to fax or mail us a copy of your
monthly credit card billing statement as a form of verification. We will
need the portion which shows your name, address, and account number. Your order will be processed as soon as this information is received and
confirmed. We appreciate your cooperation with our security measures. "

I have not got a fax and didn`t want to faff about scanning documents in and all that so, I chose dvdboxoffice and it arrived in about 10 days and it was a couple of quid cheaper to boot too!

Hope this helps!

If I was you, I`d hold fire. As far I know the `cuts` made by our beloved BBFC were very minimal (similar to the slight `trimmings` made to Fight Club), so I would keep yer money in your pocket rather than go splashin` out £20+ on the (now deleted?) over priced Criterion version.

I have the Criterion version, it`s okay, but the extras are deceptively sparse. Although there`s a big list on the back, many of them aren`t running film, they`re mostly text based. There`s even an illustrated essay on it (who`s idea was that?). If you have a widescreen telly, I`d recommend hanging on to see what the new disc is like, as there`s no substitute for a correctly rendered anamorphic transfer. this one is a touch grainy and when zoomed to fill the screen (you can guess the rest!). The "Uncut" nature of the Criterion disc is debatable, because the extra bits are just a few seconds here and there on the gruesome stuff (not in the theatrical version originally). It`s nothing to crow about so wait and see how this new release turns out (5.1 sound remember!).
