Help! what do i do to trace a landline number?

galaxy (Competent) posted this on Tuesday, 9th November 2004, 19:52

I am trying to trace where a particular number has come from, I know the area but not the the place of call !

My sister has been suffering from mental health problems over the years and now she has left her home in London and gone to Great Yarmouth with very little money and no medication.

She left over 30 hours ago and my parents are very concerned and distressed and I have not mentioned her son who is 6 !

The police are aware and are out looking for her, but she did ring this morning and did not say much, But after she hung up my mum dialled the 1471 and retreived a number, But this number is unable to take incoming calls ?

Has anybody got any ideas as it will be a huge leap.

I have done the usual thing of tapping in the phone number on several search engines which brought up the area but not anything else :/

More than likely a phone box, give the number to the police, they should be able to look it up.

There was a proggie a while back, similar to directory enquiries type disc that allowed reverse lookup with the number, but I cant remeber the name of it or it`s site ( although www.192.com rings a bell..soz, no pun intended)

Hope you get hold of your sister soon, all the best matey

you could google it. If its a youth hostel or hotel the chances are it will be listed on a website somewhere.

you use to be able to ask directory enquiries for the address if they are not x-directory not sure if they still do it

Years ago when BT was the only phone provider, there used to be a duty called the "Exchange Clerk", give he or she the number and they could look up the address. If by some stretch of the imagination, a similar job still exists, try customer services, if they are unable to give the address to you, they certainly would the police. Good luck anyway.

Galaxy

if there`s a genuine fear for your sisters safety the Police will trace the number in minutes and have the local Police attend to check on her. Unfortunately until they trace her they won`t tell you where she is!! (usually). I know this sounds harsh, but the `human rights act` says she`s entitled to a private life.

Comes in handy the HRA sometimes - but sometimes it`s a pain in the arse eh?!!!

Thanks guys for all your help!

The Police have been absolutley terrible in helping us and thus my Dad took out his anger with them as they have failed to put on and info onto their database on 2 occassions and wasting valuable time!
But we have managed to get the ball rolling a bit and we managed to trace her from a pub payphone that would accepts a return call and spoke to a barman who put us forward to a Cab he had ordered for her and got hold of the driver.

The cab driver told me he took her to a hotel, Which I rang and they agreed had a person to match the description who stayed one night, She left the next morning in another cab ordered by the hotel staff and that is where it ends....

We are awaiting a call from the member of staff of the Hotel that was one duty at that time to give us again the Cab company my Sister used to carry on our trace.

The Police have told us that to trace a specific number requires a higher authority officer of the station to fill out a seven page report before any trace can be done, Line tracing can only happen between the hours of 7am to 7pm?,But in their words was "If this was a murder enquiry, Rape or something serious then we can trace immediatley" .

Once again in this very confusing life that something serious must happen before the Police are interested...........

I have also been on to Missing Persons.org who are extremely good at getting to grips on tracing people and have alocatted a specific team to carry out a search, They have also sent me via email a MEDIA CONSENT RELEASE FORM for some media search and I have emailed over a couple of jpegs of her as well.

Fingers Crossed!

Thanks again for your feedbacks and I will keep you posted of the situation.

Why Gt Yarmouth. Is there any family, friends, re-union, nostalgia reason for her to go there? if so does that give a clue to where she is? I had a hotel at Gt Yarmouth & at this time of year most hotels are closed. Only the bigger ones are open & some who take contractors. The nearer the front the more likely they are open. Does she like Italian food, Indian etc if so try phoning the type of restaurant she might use. There`s plenty of Greek & pie & chips in Gt Yarmouth but not so many foriegn restaurants.

Well
If she has a Cash Card you could contact the bank and ask if she has drawn out any money! and if so where?
They may not tell you, but blag it and explain the situation!
Check her Credit Card bills too!

Does she have hobbies or intrests?

Does she have any known friends in the area she was last seen?
Old school friends?

Did she take her passport?

Can she drive?

Has she ever visited the area before, is there anywhere she might go?

Does she have a mobile check every number and text, check her bill to if she has one!

Any net friends?
Check her Temp internet files.
Check her emails.

Get loads of photo`s of her and give them out to people in the area she was last seen!
Offer a reward for infomation!

Ask a few hotels if the have a "emergency contact chain" many hotels have one to stop criminals it can be used to check for sightings!

What kind of jobs can she do?
Check all in the area last seen!

ONE IMPORTANT POINT
Its veru easy to hide in a seasonal seaside town!
They have lots of strangers!
Lots of work, some employers won`t even ask for an NI number!
Lots of cheap accomodation especially out of season!

Good Luck
