Not wishing to sound pessimistic Alka, but is this one of these courses that the toe rags who nick cars, joyride, ramraid, sometimes kill innocent pedestrians go on because it `will help them in the futute` ?:/
If it is then sorry I will not be signing - I say give em all ASBOS or stick em in young offenders institutes.
If it is definately for young disadvantaged young people I`ll sign. Although it`ll have to be next week when I`m back - so if I`ve just started WWIII with my comments I`ll apologise when I get back (that if I`ve not got banned) ;)

You see, BBB, its a chicken and the egg scenario.

Speaking from personal experience, we were perfectly happy kids when our youth club was open. We`d go down, hang out do activities and stuff. Normal youth club things. Then the council withdrew funding, we had no-where to go so we started hanging around on the streets and down the park causing mayhem, nicking stuff, breaking stuff, burning stuff and got into drugs. Basically because we had literally nothing to do and were bored s***less.

If the YC had stayed open im convinced that I wouldnt have got into half the trouble I did. The problem is (and please feel free to call me the insult for the millenium, a *gasp* liberal), kids need direction. Most peoples parents are too busy/knackered/lazy to care and if they get a chance to channel their energies into activities so they dont have to cause mayhem, then perhaps we wouldnt have people screaming `ASBO!` from every roof top.

And, btw, ASBOs dont actually work on kids. They just ignore them because the know nothing will happen to them.

I Dont know Karate...but I know Ker-azy!

Alka,
? are the youth that attend steering wheels sent there by the court service or can any child use your service?

I notice on your site that you demo in schools, is this a regular thing?

Are the children that use your service in full time education or are they with your service full time?

Signed - After reading the website & to give the kids a chance.

On a side note your letter needs a quick spell check Quote:
to enhance heir employment prospects

I thought this was a drviving skills project, not a teaching a bunch of hairdressers. ;)

I quite like the Helpdesk people in a benevolent (as opposed to malevolent) way as they do some valuable work in preventing us being inundated by every halfwit who can work a phone.

hi i quite agree with what you say but steering wheels is not for offenders etc but to try and help any who are at risk from doing so,children with disabilities are catered for also
do you think we would try to keep our project if this was so ?Also if the project found any of the people who try to join had been involved with car crime WOULD NOT BE ALLOWED to join

The Steering Wheels Project was set up after consultation with local young people in the areas of Speke and Garston, Liverpool. This is an area that suffers from high unemployment and low prospects.

Young people specifically asked for a motor project to enhance heir employment prospects and the use of their social and educational leisure time through motor related activities. Grasstrack car racing, Karting, Mini motor cycles, trials motorcycles and BSM pre driver safety courses are just some of the projects activities.

Our project has been established since September 1996 and in this time has shown itself to be very active within the community. This in turn has helped us build up very good relationships with youth agencies both locally and across merseyside.

In addition to supporting local young people, the project now extends support to education action zone (local secondary schools), the learning and developing skills project (who assist young men and women to move towards training and employment), and the Knowsley behavioural service (they help young people that have been statemented and are having emotional and behavioural difficulties, requiring special educational needs).
