Michael Jackson `eager` to perform at Live8 - Would this devalue the event ?

merryprankster2 (Competent) posted this on Tuesday, 14th June 2005, 19:37

It`s being reported tonight that `innocent` Mikey would now like to play Live8 either in Philadelphia or in London - but is this a good idea (for any number of reasons). If he was to do so it would be fascinating to see the audience reaction. But, if such a performance was to take place, would the overall message of Live8 be lost in further controversy?
Hopefully, if it goes ahead, Little Ant & Dec will be strongly advised to avoid any after hours invitations to `come and see some puppies`. ;)

This is the thing about this whole live8 event, among the artists who are using their talent to promote a concert to increase awareness of a cause to both the public and (hopefully) the bigwigs at the G8 summit there seems to be an element of `self publicity` about some of the acts ...rather like the spice girls rumour...this event is to try and get politicians to do something about the problems in Africa with debt, AIDS, poverty and education NOT a vehicle for a bunch of `Wannabe`s` (pun intended) to kick start their flagging solo careers ...same goes for Jackson (if the story has any truth to it) Live8 isnt the stage for Jackson to rebuild his career in glorious style in front of a worldwide audience ..although it would bring increased press attention to the event..

...It just annoys me when you get the feeling some acts are only doing it for personal gain (record sales, or because its the `cool` thing to do) and not because they support the cause....

I believe that`s what Damon Albarn has been saying, although you phrased it better...

As for mikey playing the event. Sir Bob has said that he wants acts that will draw the biggest crowd (hence the lack of unknown African acts). You can`t deny, one way or another, MJ will do exactly that. I personally think it`s too soon.

You also get the feeling that some people are only going to this because they are interested in the music and have no particular interest in the cause too - its hard to differentiate. IMHO Jacko would probably be more interested in the cause than some others that are there, and as Bob G said - it is about publicity.

Of course it would be a good idea, because we could chuck bottles of p*** at him whilst booing.

Hope that they`re official Live8 merchandise bottles of p*** or Bob will not be pleased

From the BBC site:-
`Live 8 promoter Harvey Goldsmith said he would "obviously" consider adding Jackson to the bill of one of the 2 July anti-poverty concerts if the singer volunteered.
"Whether it`s appropriate or not is another issue, whether he`s in a fit state to work is another issue, whether he can work is another issue and whether he can work live is another issue," Mr Goldsmith told London-based radio station Capital FM`.

I will never, EVER listen to a Bob Geldof record again.

Nothing to do with Jackson, I just hate his music.
