pay pal ripped me off..............any advice?

peter parker (Competent) posted this on Friday, 6th January 2006, 22:46

the short of it is i sold a games console on ebay, although clearly listed as a pal machine an american bought it and then complained she could not get it to work.
i explained it was a pal machine and a uk standard and that she needed a converter i also explaines i assumed she new this as it was clearly stated on e bay that it was a pal machine.
she replies that she did not know what pal meant or even uk. :/ she then contacted paypal who took the money out of my account and although i explained my case to them gave her a full refund and she is sending the machine back.
my problem is that because i sent the machine to the usa it cost me £45.00 which has been refunded to this lady in the usa even though its her mistake in the first place.
paypal have said the decision has been made and its final........can i take it further or am i well and truly boned >:(

sorry to say it but you are `boned`

gaypal sucks the fat one and there is bugger all you can do about it.

It`s also fairly typical of american buyers but not all. You may be lucky and find one that knows about the world outside of the USA

One even asked me what `pounds sterling` was once!

To be fair, most of us Brits probably don't know the difference between PAL and NTSC as it only becomes relevant when you're importing films or games from abroad. And bear in mind that the Yanks don't actually need to import nearly as much hardware or software as we do, so they're far less likely to have heard of PAL.

How did you explain the compatibility issues in your original listing? That will propbably be the deciding factor in any appeal to eBay.

most Brits know what the US dollar is tho` right? Or is it just me?

Anyway, ignorance is not an excuse is it?

that suck balls :( it`s clearly the buyers fault. this is one of the reasons i have any non uk registered users barred from bidding on any of my items, it`s just not worth the hassle.

have you tried ringing paypal ? the one & only time i ever had problems with them, the email system is useless & gets ignored, but got it sorted with one phonecall :/

To save you hunting around the paypal website for a number, it`s part way down the page on this website: http://www.aboutpaypal.org/

Makes good reading too...

trust me i had a very interesting conversation with pay pal who basically said that postage has nothing to do with them they just deal with the full transaction . i did explain the e mails she sent but they said e mails could be doctored and were not really evidence.... i guess you live you learn >:(
i can understand not knowing what pal meant but not knowing what uk european meant is frankly taking the p##s. and if i didnt understand what something on a listing meant i would not bid on it.... dumb american woman :/

thanks for letting me get that out of my system next time its gonna be uk buyers only. :)

I was just about to suggest that! :D

PayPal can indeed suck for anyone recieving money, but I wouldn`t ever dream of using anything else for an eBay purchase if only for the speed aspect.

What you should have done is emptied your PayPal account, if it was clearly listed as PAL machine, they buyer shouldn`t have gotten he rmoney back.

Thats like saying the idiots who buy XBOX 360 boxes for $800 aren`t at fault, just because they didn`t read the auction details!

Sorry to hear though. Is she going to pay for the item being shipped back?

yea she is paying to ship back and this is one of the reasons they have given her a full refund, they seem to think its fair that we ar both £45.00 out of pocket even though it was her fault.
if i emptied the paypal account can`t they take it of your card? i did think of that when they took the money but i still had money in my account when it happened.
