What tourist destination/event really lived up to the hype?

girders (Competent) posted this on Thursday, 2nd February 2006, 20:31

Yesterday`s thread about the Northern lights started me thinking... so what places/events really lived up to the hype and what was a bit of a let down?

For me the Golden Gate Bridge was a bit underwhelming although San Fransisco was fantastic. I was just left thinking that the Forth Rail Bridge was more impressive.

CN Tower in Toronto was everything I expected.

Niagara Falls absolutely blew my mind - much more impressive than I ever imagined.

I`d be particularly interested if anyone can comment on Uluru (Ayers Rock)

Yes it was - Would have been better had it not been overcast & raining (sleeting at Skypod level the day we went (Should have done Casa Lomas second while the sun was at least visable)).

I have never managed to be overwhelmed by the falls themselves all that much on each of the 3 times visited (The town ruins it for me, even if the falls area is free of tat shops).

Ever since Superman II I was expecting something far bigger. Walk behind the falls is impressive though, we have never done TMOTM boat tours sadly.

My job got a lot less stressfull when I realised I hate my customers.

For me Sydney was underwhelming, i had heard so much about the harbour, but it was not all that. The thing that exceeded expectation was the grand canyon, the scale is almost beyond comprehension.

Did Oz in `02 (as I;ve probably mentioned) and nothing really blue me away. Sydney Opera house was ok, but you`ve seen it so many times on TV it doesn`t surprise you. Bit grubby close-up, too. Cairns was probably the nicest place I stayed at, mainly as we stayed for a week and got to know the area quite well. Hamilton Island was cool (GE 20°20`35.67"S 148°57`15.21"E) but ran out of inexpensive things to do quickly.

Portaventura (universal studios, Spain) rocked, but again was a bit pricey. Never actually heard anything about the place until i got there (the recent advertising is new on me). Can`t move in La Pineda for giant Woody woodpeckers. If you go I heartily recommend Templo del Fuego (sneak in a video camera)

Niagra, very impressive. Went to the canada side (`91) so actually went behind the falls. Loud.

Uluru?

Very impressive.

In fact, I think she was my favourite Star Trek character.

And what she did to Gene Roddenberry under the table.....!!

Venice. I have yet to hear of anyone that was disappointed. And yes, the expensive gondola rides are an absolute must. Share with a stranger, it doesn`t matter.
Delphi. I just cried and cried at the beauty of the spot, and the stunning ruins.
Norwegian Cruise on the local service ships. Nothing fancy, just breathtaking beauty, constant awe and deep peace. Ever been at sea and seen the stars?

I went to Tunisia 10 years ago but just looked like something out of Raiders Of The Lost Ark! Go into the `town` and you get pestered like mad by the local traders....no matter how many times you tell `em to F#@* Off!!!!

Venice amazed me and I cannot wait to go back. :D

The most underwhelming is Amsterdam.
Have no desire to go there ever again. :(
