Going to see Miss Saigon in two weeks time...
I`m taking my girlfriend to see Miss Saigon at the Mayflower - I`ve only seen the film version, so what`s the theatre version like??
RE: Going to see Miss Saigon in two weeks time...
I assume it`s the version that played in Drury Lane years ago (and which I did a few of in the pit myself :D ). If the Mayflower is a big theatre then you should be pleasantly surprised...especially if they use the helicopter ;)

The Mayflower is pretty big, and the acoustics are excellent - almost as good as Manchester`s MEN Arena!!
Last time I went to the Mayflower was to see Hank Marvin and the Shadows on their farewell tour - and that was simply awesome!!

Well if you like the music, and they have the sound balance sorted (as that can be very hard to do in big shows like this), then I doubt you`ll be disappointed :-)

I don`t think it was ever a film, was it?

Apparently they are using the helicopter.

Channel 4 screened the film version a few years ago - it was followed by a documentary about the play.

No, they didn`t. Miss Saigon the musical, set during the Vietnam War, has NEVER been filmed or released on DVD. There was a documentary about the casting and direction of the show, released on VHS, and many excerpts have been performed in Royal Variety Shows etc.
The version you will see is the "slimmed down" tour, which has been very successful. Unlike the Drury Lane show, the helicopter and other effects are done with projection techniques, rather than "live" as was the case in the West End. It`s one of the best of the modern musicals, basically a rewrite of Madam Butterfly the opera, and play which is set in 19th Century Japan. Maybe it`s this you`re thinking of, as it was shown on Channel 4 fairly recently.
It`s worth seeing in any event!

Saw it in London about 12 years ago(ish).
With the helicopter in it.
Actually ended up sharing a box with the tall bloke that does the channel 4 news, not that it`s important like... :D
Anyway, didn`t expect to enjoy it,but it was alright.
I would say it`s definitely more one for the weepie women than blokes, but alright all the same.
Not a patch on Chitty Chitty Bang Bang though ! :D
It`s frakkin superb. 8)
