Page 1 of Can`t wire a plug?
General Forum
Having seen this story the other day, I was wondering if it could really be true. So are there any of you out there who can`t wire a plug? (I`m not expecting many to be honest on a site like this one)
If you really can`t, how old are you?

I saw this the other day & thought it pure media spin at the time.
BL Blue Left & BR Brown Right leaving Earth in the middle as you look into the plug to be wired, thats the way I taught myself to recall it anyhow.
I consider myself an optimist, albeit an optimist with cynical tendencies and a dark side that Lucifer himself would find a little creepy. (Perhaps you've noticed.) You don't normally associate cynicism with an upbeat pov. But I have exactly that combination and will defend it.

My parents taught me basic things like that - but we also got taught to do it in a science lesson in Y7. I`ve never actually had to do it though.
Edit: I love how the comments section just decended into lightbulb jokes. :D

I like that system, I always have to stop and think for a bit before it comes back to me normally - but that`s without any mnemonic or whatever, so perhaps now I`ll remember more quickly.
The other statistic that really amazed me was the fact that over half of under-30s can`t bleed a radiator - how simple can it be?
I always had trouble remembering how to wire a plug (and I was studying Elecrtrical and Electronic engineering at Tech. at the time :o ) until a non technical friend told me the "John Brown is a live wire" one. I always put it down to the change to the logical colour selection of Brown=Live, Blue=Neutral, what was wrong with Red and Black?

Have you tried switching it on........?

Same thing that was wrong with pounds shillings and pence, pounds and ounces, feet and inches etc etc.
Just not European you see.

I can wire a plug (I`m 30) as long as the instructions are there which say which wire goes to which pin, as I haven`t done it since i was taught at about 7.
Anyway, most plugs are moulded these days, and it`s probably quicker and easier to buy a new lead.
Let`s do a survey of 50+ year olds
We`ll give them a PC with no OS on it, and see how many can install Windows XP home on it. I reckon most would just say they don`t know how ;)
My mum the other day wanted to mend a pair of my socks, `cos they had a hole in them, she couldn`t believe it that I (or my gf) didn`t have clue about how to darn socks, and I`d just through the sock away and buy another pair!
But my mum still hasn`t used the PC I bought her several years ago, along with a Windows for Dummies book, and an office for Dummies book. Against my argument, dad has turned it on to surf the internet, apparently google is great ;) Saying that, if the internet was broken I`m sure I`d get a phone call pretty quick from him ;)

I use the exact same system as Rassilion. only had to do a few in my time though. These days you cant even take the plug apart, even to change the fuse :/ "which is nice"

Stop the winking, you don`t mean it.
I have installed windows on several computers & all my (older :/ ) friends who have computers also install windows themselves. We take students & some are red hot on computers, they are mostly 18 to 25 & there`s many a time I`ve had to help get they`re computers running again. As I`ve said in other threads I`m no computer expert but I seem to know more than the students I get.
Don`t forget legislation changed about 10 years ago in the interests of safety where all electrical products have to come with a plug attached.
